tranny question

got a quick question, going to look at a tranny friday, he told me its off a dohc ZC so i wanna see if its an actual ZC tranny, or an Si tranny or a DX tranny, how can i tell these apart?? and if its a true ZC tranny look in the classifieds saturday prolly cuz i wont be using it as i dont have the axels for it.

Look for PL3/3000 cast into the casing just above the fill plug for a si tranny.
PL3/A000 or A100 denotes the smaller bearing HF, DX, STD tranny.

are there any advantages to using the Si tranny? and if it is a real ZC tranny would there be any advantage to go buy new axels and use that tranny??

Si trany has shorter gears than the DX tranny. The DX was built more for gas economy while the Si was built more towards acceleration. So the Si will make your car speed up quicker than the DX tranny. Then theres the ZC. This has even shorter gears than the Si tranny so that rpm drop between shifts is less. So you'll speed up even quicker with the ZC tranny. The downside to the ZC tranny is, cruising on the highway you'll be turning pretty high rpms so worse gas mileage. The best way to go is get a zc tranny and put in an Si final drive. You'll have the quickest acceleration with not as high rpms on the highway. how can I check to make sure its in good condition? its not in a car so i dont know if it has any grinds or not, what should i be looking for??

well, i picked up the tranny tonight and looked and saw the PL3/3000 on the side! :D so i gots myself an Si Tranny :) i'm pretty happy, should be going in next weekend, need 2 get the flywheel re-surfaced tho that i got with it


also, what should I check on the tranny? i noticed the motor mount looks different from the one I got, will it be a problem??

just to clear up a few things.

the ZC has a 3.88 final, just like the DX. Si is 4.25.

a ZC transmission with a 4.25 final will be sitting at a higher rpm per gear than with the 3.88 final.

A ZC's gears are not shorter than an Si, they are closer. gear ratios determine how much the rpm drops between shifts and the final determines the "length" of the gear.
