The AC light will flash on and off and the compressor seems to do on and off. Under warrenty they "fixed" it but it is back. Any ideas? It is a very random flash and some time it may stay steady for a day or so.
Edit... If i have it set to recirculate that would reset also.

I put a can of oil into my AC system with some R-134 and the light seemed to stop flashing on and off.

this is a very common problem with malibu's, the a/c control head must be replaced. pricey but the only fix

And, sorry to say, the control head, once fixed, will likely go again and again. I forget how many I had in the '98 over 6 years. At least 4.

What are you Calling the A/C Control head i have the Same Problem in my 97 Malibu. I Turn the A/C off and Back on and it goes away for a while. some times minutes sometimes days/weeks. also my blower doesnt work on settings 1 and 2 its annoying. i think its in the heater/ac control panel but im not sure i only use this vehicle a few days per week so it hasnt become a major problem yet. I know it will though.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not worth the time and money to repair

Most likely is a short in the either the electrical connector to the control panel or in the control panel itself. Haven't nailed exact location down yet.

I have replaced 2 control heads on my 98 malibu and the one I have in now is starting to act up. Down here in Fla you gotta have AC! Its a very common problem and I have heard that some mechanics do about 6-7 of these a week on malibus. Chevy should have corrected this problem. The original part was faulty and the replacement part is also.

 I am about to go and pick up my 98 Malibu LS from the dealers. Its there for about the 6th time since I bought it 3 1/2 yrs ago. This is the second time in 2yrs that I have had to have the control head replaced. The dealership told me that its supose to be some kind of "new and improved" part from the manufactures. They then told me that it looks exactly the same as the old faulty ones but that they havent looked inside the part to compare...they then said "We'll see". HUH and what am I supose to do after 2500 miles when my warrenty is done and gone? It really sucks that most likely my only option will be to get a new car when we just paid off my husbands jeep cherekee and the Malibu is almost paid off. I really really like the look of the Malibu (not the new style) and would have really considered trading this one in for a 2003 just to have the same look but a newer model, but the way I feel now is I dont want to ever drive another Chevy again! :2cents:

I have 2 malibu's and am looking for a fix. There has to be a way around this. I don't think it's the switch itself, but rather the IC chip. Does anyone have a wiring diagram? I am a electronics tech and could fix this if I had a wiring map.
