short throw shifter

hey i got a question...im not really thinkin about doin it but i was just curious...what all is a short throw shifter?? just a shortened regular stick?? and do you think it would work if i just chopped my regular stick to make it a "homemade" short throw?? again...im not really thinkin about doin it unless everybody thinks it would work
