93 dakota problem

I have a V8 Dakota and it has some kind of electrical problem with the ignition. It will instantly die, or just not start. I have checked and there is no spark during this condition. But if I come back later it will start and run fine. It does this weather it is hot or cold and is driving me crazy. The dealership told me to just bring it in next time it dies, but I do not trust dealerships. I have the truck new since 93 and love it to much to give up on it. Any advice would be welcomed.

I replaced the crank trigger and it has been trouble free for the last four weeks. Thank you for the advice, and the allpar.com web site was a great benifit.

Have friend with a 93 dodge dakota. Had symptoms like yours, after investigating, replacing ignition trigger, etc. problem was found in the wiring harness along inside fender well area. Old insulation worn away and caused breakdown of the wiring itself. This explained why intermittent problems. Replaced bad wiring (splicing) with heatshrink and rewrapping insulation. Not a problem since. We really had to look close to see the insulation worn away. Harness had the old cloth type insulation.
