An AF.com regular by the name of Ross Allen (ra 15) has done a ton of great drawings of various cars, including the McLaren F1:

You can check out his entire gallery (including an Enzo, McLaren SLR, Murciélago, Koenigsegg, Pagani Zonda, and Saleen S7 among others) here: http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=118193

 I like the sketch a lot. I just wish that I could draw. I have 6 different artworks, but don't know how to set up a page to display them. I guess I need to work on that. Let me work on it this weekend and I'll see if I can post them.

i still think his pictures are traced. Go to his geocities site and compare his drawings to the pics of the car (you'll find pix that match exactly) and you'll see what i mean

at least his slr is. i compared it to one of mercedes' press release photos in photoshop, and they matched 100%

I decided to give it another go, but didn't get it.

The McLaren is hard to master. :(

This Newbie is gonna try to direct you'll (Texan) to an album with some new pics. I hope it works and hope you'll enjoy the photos. Wish me luck. Here's the link ---- http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4286734743

I guarantee they are traced. The body is way too exact and what gives it away is the windshield. If you could draw a shape that well, but shade that bad it's traced. Everything looks good except the windshield, horrible. Tracing isn't a bad way to learn to draw, it's what they teach in art school. Andy warhol didn't even paint several of his paintings, he directed understudies. So have at it, tracing takes some of the frustration out of trying to draw.

I think it looks pretty good. :bigthumb:

Kinda like a pre-production concept drawing.

Good eyes Mini Magic & Gurndski ,it is most definitely traced. I did an overlay of the artwork and a photo of a silver F1 that I have and it is traced. The only thing that he has done is to rotate the image around slightly. You'll can follow the link that I have below and take a look at the last pic in the album. It is the Allen sketch overlayed over that original photo. They are an exact match line for line including the reflections in the window.

btw, mercy, thats not an LM, its a GTR (chassis #16). Someone has taken off the decals in a pic thats in driving ambition. I think Erik posted a nice hi res version of it somewhere.

I thought that the car traced was just a standard Mclaren. I don't know all of the chassis numbers and such, but maybe someone can slap me around and set me straight as to whicn car it actually is. I posted the photo of the Pic (the real thing) that was traced just after the fake overlay that I did. If you look at the fake photo it is the tracing faded into the real photo that is in the album just after the fake. You can tell that the wheels and even the reflection in the window are in the same place. Once again in the album on Imagestation.

I found this quote from Ra_15 in another thread when someone asked him if his drawings are traced:

yea, I trace the basic outline, but thats just to save time, so i dont have to keep rubbing out to get it perfect, but most of my drawings are hand drawn.

You guys should really check out the "sketching and drawing" forum if you want to see some impressive stuff.

Also, here is an LM in progress done by another artist:

Whoa, now that's what I call art. It may not be accurate to the real car, but that isnt the point.

Hey MPowered,

Do you have a hi-res version of the pic labelled "Paul_laguette"?
That's some awesome line art...I would love to see it in more detail!

Hey cche2052, that's the largest size that I have. It holds up pretty well when you stretch it around and stuff. I've had it for quite some time and don't remember where it came from. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. Maybe someone else has a larger copy.

Darn!:)

Thanks anyway:) Does anyone out there have a bigger version? I won't post it here to suck up bandwidth but its the one that looks like it was drawn by a comic book artist... very clean and accurate lines.

How did they manage to make it look like it was drawn? Does anyone know how to apply that effect on other photographs?

I wanna know the same, i have tried several times but failed:( Like what programme can you use etc, i know all you guys use mostly photoshop but how?

mini magic
06-01-2004, 03:38 PM
photoshop. long tutorial shortened (there is a much longer one somewhere, i'll try to find it)

open the image, make a new layer and make it transparent (i think). then go over the outline of teh car in the pen tool or whatever you want. copy the layer and paste onto a new white one.

kinda hard to explain

cche2052
06-02-2004, 01:10 AM
That's it? Isn't that like tracing with layers? wow. How do you trace with such accuracy using your mouse? Is there any vector line drawing involved? Or maybe its using illustrator instead of photoshop?

Gosh i'm really really interested in the process... Someone pls share if you know how...

mini magic, where did you find out how they did it?

mini magic
06-02-2004, 04:20 PM

http://www.brookspeed.com/art-of-motion/index.html

These are the newest additions to Ian Cunningham's illustrations. The Le Mans winning McLaren F1 GTR and the Gulf F1 GTR. These illustrations come as a high quality prints with an image size of 560mm W x 320mm H and will fit a standard 700 x 500 frame.

I just found this on one of my random tours of the internet while searching for anything new on the McLaren. They appear to be decent works, but don't know what the price of shipping would be to the U.S. I think I'll send an email to ask what the shipping might be across the big pond. Hope you'll enjoy it.

I don't know if you can still get them, but I've an engineering drawing/cutaway of a BRG F1 that I bought off Ebay by an artist named John Lawson, limited to 250 pieces, and co-signed by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu (BIG name in Historic car circles). That was VERY much worth the cash. Exquisite detailing and extremely classy when framed! :)

Ya might want to check out the renderings on this forum. This user named < pinner > has produced some excellent renderings of the McLaren. I guarantee it's worth the trip. Don't know how to move this thread to the head of the pack, but I think it's worth a visit for all McLaren Lovers. Outstanding work.
