Timing My 1995 Gmc Sierra

I recently changed the intake manifold gaskets in my 95 GMC Sierra.
When Installing the distributor after finding TDC do I have the rotor
pointing at #1 or #8 on the distributor cap or at the #8 stamped on
the distributor casting. I have three people telling me three different ways, also how do you determine if you are "a tooth off". Please Help!!
