Cut exhaust pipe?

A couple of my buddies told me to cut the exhaust pipe so my car would sound loud. Well we cut a 2 1/2 inch peice and left the barrel on the hangers. It sounds nice but I have a couple questions. Is it illegal? and Is it bad for my car. Any help is appreciated.
