Randomly my “93 Pathfinder (Auto Transmission)” will not start. It just makes a clicking sound?
Sometimes just a few fast key turns can get it started, other times I have to let it set for an hour or so? All internal lights and power are functioning. At first this was happening on hot days or if I drove it for a couple hours at a time, now it just happens whenever?
The battery is new. I have had a new starter put into it (Three times?? They thought it was a bad part). After the third time out of the shop and it was still happening they disconnected the alarm system and keyless entry thinking that was were it was shorting out, but it did not help at all. Same thing is still happening!! So now not only will my pathfinder not start at random, but now I do not have features that I use to have?
If anyone has any feedback I would highly appreciate it. This is becoming a very annoying and very expensive problem. In addition, it is not getting fixed!!! Please Help!!!

I have had similar problems with my 91. I replaced several starters. Things to check, Pull your alternator and have it bench tested. That was my problem. Also spray some electrical contact cleaner on your connection at the starter. The oil filter is located just above the starter and when the filter is changed oil can run down on to the selinoid and cause it to not work correctly. The starters on these pathfinders have a history of being shotty and unreliable. Let me know if this helps.

i have the same problem on my 94 manual transmission.
i found this at the 4X4 parts forum:
http://65.166.200.170/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=315995&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=all&vc=1
it talks about adding an electrical relay to fix this common problem. note there is an attachment that gives a wiring diagram.
i haven't tried it yet, as i am trying to find the old relay so i won't have to bypass the clutch safety switch.
if you try it before me, please post some pics.
good luck

Hello Everyone,
I wish I could say I have found a solution to this problem. I took my truck back in for a fourth time to the shop and they reconnected my alarm system, except for the after market engine kill switch. For a while that seemed to have fixed the problem. However, since we have been having very hot days and weeks, it is back to not starting. It is mostly on hot weather days. Please let me know if you or anyone does find some sort of a solution to this problem. I love my pathfinder, but it is becoming very undependable and I am afraid I will have to trade it off.
Please help save my pathfinder, keep sending me feed back.
Thank You! Valorie

The dreaded clicking noise had me stumped for a few months until I came across an easy solution that only cost me around $10 to fix. Just behind the battery on the fenderwell, you should see a relay w/a blue top...I think it's the only part in that general area attached to the fenderwell. Anyway, you can either purchase the actual relay ($13 @ Autozone) or you can just buy a 30 amp, 5 prong automotive relay for a little bit cheaper. It may be a good idea to buy a few short pieces of wire to replace those running into the relay as they may be fried or corroded. Don't forget to cover the new, bare wires/connectors! Bad experience, don't ask. Of course I learned this trick only after I put a new starter in... :banghead: Oh well... Guess the only downside of this for you is it only keeping your friends occupied for about 20 minutes. And to those wanting to know how to get the old starter out, pull towards the front after taking that large metal plate off from underneath.
