I'm thinking of installing an alarm on my 2000 4Runner SR5. I have several questions and need your help:
1. How do I check if there is already car alarm installed? I have keyless entry remote with panic button on it.
2. What's your recommendation of alarm system if I need to install one. I need a alarm with ignition disability function and of course reasonable price
3. How much does dealer usually charge for a factory alarm installed?
4. Is it difficult to install alarm by myself?

Thanks a lot

Here's how to check if you have an alarm:

Roll down a window. Lock the door with the remote fob (not the lock switch in the truck). Reach in and open the door (you may have to unlock by hand). This should set the alarm off. Hit the lock button on the fob to turn it off. Also, on my 98 4Runner, there is a little red light in a black square marked Toyota Security. On mine it is fairly visible on the center console with the rear window switch. Sometimes it is on the dash and may be obscured by the steering wheel. If you're not looking for the little red light when it's dark it could be easy to miss.

If you lock up using the switch inside the truck, it does not arm the security system. This is the setting from the factory. This might also explain why you did not notice the light, as there wouldn't be on. This can be changed.

My system is the factory RS3000, which has a 27 page owner's manual that you can get online at http://www.4runners.org/articles/rs3000/

I found the pdf owner's manual (for the remote) extremely helpful. This system has lots of options you can set.

This system does disable the starter.

Good luck!

I don't recomend relying on the factory alarm or the add on OEM part. They are a joke mainly because they are all the same and always hooked up (so can be bypassed) the same. I strongly suggest a DEI alarm along with some of the add ons you can get. Goto www.directed.com to see.
