It occured to me while watching my new fast and the furious dvd, that i have never heard an engine make the sound those cars make.
What I'm talking about: When Brian (in the beginning of the movie) is sitting in his Eclipse getting ready to max out the engine, and he is at a track or a deserted road or whatever that was, and he is revving his engine, right after he lets off the gas and the rpms start dropping, as they drop, there is a whistling noise, a high pitched whirring.
WHAT IS THAT?!
what part makes that noise, i want it, that is the coolest noise ever.

thats the turbo, and more specifically the blowoff valve. it creates a "whistle" as it sucks air in and a "chirp" when the gas is released

Yeh it's the turbo. Really with a four cylinder engine, the whistling of the turbo isn't as distinct as with trucks. I just put a Banks Turbo on a 7.3L '93 Ford Diesel Dually. You can really hear the sound with turbo euipped trucks. Even with some of the classic B-52 Macks. :smoker2:

i think its louder on trucks cuz they generally use a bigger turbo and turbo system as a whole. haha one day i revved at a civic in front of me and right as he revved an 18wheeler next to me spooled up and blew off i was like "omg i dont wanna race that civic!" then i realized it was the 18wheeler. but it scared me for a minute there!

The best turbo sound in the movie is when the Supra is rounding the corner right before he races the Dodge. The turbo sound just, I dunno..........mmmmmm......TURBO!

I also can't figure out what the *chink* noise is when the eclipse shifts gears

that chink is the chirping sound mentioned above. Basically a turbo works by forcing more air into the engine(thats a very simplified explanation) this is sometimes referred to as boost and is usually measured in p.s.i.(damn imperial measurments:) ) the more boost the faster you go, but this boost increase increases pressure. When you shift gears your not using the cars power for a moment so the exra boost(or pressure) thats being produced has to be sent somewhere or else it will just keep increasing until it blows up(kinda like putting too much air in a balloon) Thats why we use bov's or boost overflow valves. it's basically just a little valve that opens when you shift gears so that the air has somewhere to go instead of destroying your engine. So that sound is the sound of the air being forced out of the little vent on the bov, sorta like an extremely high power whistle.:)

Do you know where can I get buy this thing for my car to make the same noise?
If you do let me know... Thanx!

Noises:
Air sucking = that noise comes from the airfilter
Seriously high revving spiining noise = turbo spool up (think Sport bike on crack)
Pssssht = Blow Off Valve (this is the noise when you let OFF throttle and boost pressure is "blown off"
If you hear someone's BOV while they are racing, they are not shifting as fast and as hard as they could. ;)

To correct a few things said above:
*The amount of turbo spool up noise you hear has nothing to do with the size of the engine. It has to do with the size fo the turbo! Bigger turbo = more noise. Secondly, the more open your system is, the more distinct the noise is. Thirdly, the more boost pressure you run, the more you hear the noise (more boost = more turbo rpms = more noise)
*Blow off valves do not vent air to stop boost from building up to the point where the engine blows up. That is what the wastegate does.
When you let of thottle, the throttle plate CLOSES and you will have boost air (air under pressure!) and that air will need to go some where. The BOV vents that air, that is why you hear it.
Without a BOV, that air would rush back through the intake and try to spin the turbo in the WRONG direction. That valve is there in order to prevent damage to the turbocharger.

Do you know where can I get buy this thing for my car to make the same noise?

You would need to install a turbo system and a blow off valve. There are stupid little devices that will make the noise even without the turbo, but why advertise having a turbo when you don't?
Also, don't drag up threads older than three months old.
