After Head Gasket Replacement?

OK, I just got a '95 Z28 Camaro that didnt run with a blown head gasket. It was pulling water into the first cylinder on ever stroke, so i took it apart and replaced the gasket along with a set of plugs and everything else looked fine. But, when I got it together and started it up, it was smoking a lot out the exhaust and it didnt respond well. When I hit the gas quick it would bog down a bit and sometimes backfire but other wise it seemed to run desently. Does anyone know what could be wrong or what I should try? My only guess is that the catalectic converter is filled with water and that is causeing to much back preasure along with burning the antifreeze off slowly. Should I just let it run for a while? years ago when I had my 92rs i had a lazer for a winter car. I also blew the head gasket but also did alot more damage. I ended up changing the engine completely. After the engine change, for about 3 days, the engine ran shitty and smoked while the exhaust system burned out all the crap that was stuck in it. Then all of a sudden it ran beautiful. Maybe your situation is similar and it will all clear out like mine did.

it might be cleared up after a few days, but if not, the coolant fried your converter, its dead, youll need a new one, but with the cost of those damn things, id drive it a while and see what happens. also, the O2 sensors might be shot and need replacement.

i would pull the cat and let the car run for a few see whats coming out, 94-96 had really shitty cats i said screw i new one took a long screw driver a hammer and a 23inch marine corps issued mashede and hollowed the bitch out

Thanks for the help. I've been running it and it is clearing out. There is still a little delay that is getting better and it's idling really rough but I'm going to get some good gas and injector cleaner and im hopeing it will take care of that.
