I have a manual and am planning to change the oil. What type of motor oil is the best for the 3KGT? Also, what type of gear oil is the best? Thanks.

I used i think Coastal gear oil in mine and its doing kick ass, Coastal is what most big rigs use that i know of, and it was the same weight as that expensive ass Redline shit or whatever, so I was like, ok....well same weight, and its good enough for all the hard towing torque diesel big rigs, good enough for my VR-4, i used it, and its kicking ass.

i really like Mobile 1 0w-40 weight for the oil. its specially made in germany, and works really well on cars with turbo engines.

mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30 is what I use for engine oil
as far as gear oil,
This might help with the change:
http://www.stealth316.com/2-awddrainfill.htm
I used it because I had never done it before, and it helped me find the right bolts to take off, and it had alot of good advice on oils and random stuff.
For the transaxle and transfer case I used Synchromesh
For the Rear Diff I used Mobil 1 synthetic 75W90
redline is good too.
After I finished I definantly could notice a vast improvement shifting.

Uh....I don't know what all the "transaxle" and "rear diff" stuff you're talking about. Is it only in VR4s or do we have to deal with those in SLs as well? I thought there was only the motor oil and gear oil!?!

uh, the transaxle is just another name for the transmission i think, and the rear diff, should be the rear differental, which is wut makes the wheels turns a different way than wut the engine turns

Okay, so replacing the transaxle oil is the same as replacing the gear oil right? So do SLs have a rear differential as well or is it only in VR4s?

I don't think they do, being that it is FWD, but I'm not positive. If you can get a picture of your underbody posted, I can point out the stuff to you. Essentially in my vr4 I had to change the oil in 3 different places.

How about the transfer case that Igovert500 mentioned above. Do SLs have to worry about that one too or is that one only in VR4s? Thanks a bunch guys!!

uh, i think even if you have front wheel, u need a rear diff. cuz if u dont how can u get the rear wheels to move? idk, im not positive on that though..

Okay, confused now....help!?!

ok, lemme see if i can explain this...for you rear differental, you see, your engine in turning, and it makes a long rod or something under ur car turn as well. that long rod is connected to the rear differental makes the turning from the engine into turning into a different direction to turn the wheels. now, even on front wheel drive cars, you prolly still ahve a rear differental.

So is there oil or fluid in the rear differental that must be changed in an SL as well? Sorry but I'm just a bit confused here cause I thought there was just the motor oil and the gear oil that I had to worry about. Didn't know about the whole transfer case and rear differental and transaxle!?!? :o/

Ok, I guess that makes sense. Slade, I think there is a Stealth ES at work, I will check under the car and see if it has all 3. They all use gear oil, it is just that they don't share the same reseviour, so you must drain and fill 3 different pieces. It was pretty easy for me the first time, it took the longest to get the car level and off the ground. Check out that link I pasted earlier, it really helped me, and even though it is for the VR4, I think it will point you in the right direction.

So Igovert500, you used the same type of gear oil in all 3 cases, right? And then there's the motor oil right? Thanks for all the help. And if you could get back to me about that Stealth, that would be great. Thanks bro.

Damn Stealth was gone in the morning before my shift, but I will check the first N/A I see. Also, I didn't use the same oil in all 3, I used synchromesh in the transfer case and transaxle, and mobil 1 75w90(i think, check my first post for accuracy) for the rear differential. Both of those said gear oil on them. These are different from motor oil. (mobil 1 10w30, or whatever)
Different weights and such.
I would check that webpage that I posted in my first response, it had a great summary of different types of gearoil and such.
