95 Grand Am fuel problem at start?

I have a 95 Grand Am GT and when I start it and first hit the accelerator it seems as if it's not getting gas, then it does and lightly lurches forward. If I take it easy of rlike 10 seconds it works fine. Once it gets going there is no problem. It doesn't do this all the time, but only like 4 or 5 times a week. For a while it would die when this would happen, but now it doesn't. I brought it in and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. They put a new oil filter in, a new o ring, and then after experience the problem themselves they put in a new O2 filter. It didn't work though. The mechanic was pretty sure it wasn't the fuel pump. Does anyone know what could be wrong. I really don't want to go and spend a couple hundred dollars to not fix the problem again.

You should try cleaning off the Mass Airflow Sensor. I had a really bad hesitation with my '93, which seemed as if it was a fuel problem (filter, pump, etc.) But i read about cleaning off the sensor, and it fixed the problem instantly. I would do this as a last attempt before spending money, since this costs nothing.

Where is the Mass Airflow Sensor? Is there anything special that I should clean it with? This is different than the o2 sensor that they replaced? Thanks

It's after the air filter. The honey comb looking thing. I'm guessing carb & choke cleaner should do the trick. Good Luck, hope it works out.

Near your air intake stuff, there is a black square/box with Three screws holding it in place. Also, a plug in the bottom.

take the three screws out, and pull it off, (its easier to do if you unplug the wire from the bottom). After you have it off, just spray in carefully with some Carb/Choke cleaner, 2 + 2, etc... anything of that nature.. and (if this was the problem) it should be fixed.. anything else, just ask and i'll try to check back often.

I heard that MAF sensor fixes the problem you are having with your vehicle.
If that does not work, you might want to check or replace the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). The TPS usually develop dead spots in them and so it does not give out a proper voltage signal to the computer and so the computer does not know what position the throttle plate is opened.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try them out hopefully tonight after work or tomorrow. I'll let you know if it works. It might take a few days to see since the problem does not happen all the time. It actually had the problem this morning and died. It actually is worse since they "fixed" it. Oh well, I'll let you know.

clean the coils with alchohol (isoprpyl) and use a micro fiber cloth to dab the coils gently and degunkafy them.

I have a 95 grand am SE and I've been having the same problem. It only does it after the car has been sitting for a while, like overnight, and it always seems like its gonna die on me but then it is fine. I recently took it in to get fixed by a mechanic and they could not find anything wrong with it. I want to try to fix this problem myself because I can't afford to take it in to a mechanic. Anyone got any ideas?
