Some obscure trivia that bugs me...

Okay... this was a trivia question that one of my teachers asked the class back when I was in Junior High (so... about 13-14 years ago), but for some reason, it's been really bugging me lately and I can't seem to figure it out, and was wondering if anyone here is up to the challenge? I never did hear the answer from the teacher, and as far as I know, nobody figured it out.
So, the question was:
Why are hearts drawn the way they are? like this:

They don't look anything like an actual heart, but there has to be a reason for that particular shape.

That's pretty cool and freaky how in 2 seperate cultures, oceans away from eachother, had the same symbol for the heart :screwy:
