Idle Problems

I'm having some REALLY bad idle problems right now. To fix the problem I was thinking that I should get new plugs and wires and possibly a new fuel filter. Does that sound about right??? What plugs and wires should I get??? Is there anything I can do so I can drive it until my parts get here??? I'd like to be able to drive it tonight if at all possible. TIA

What is wrong with the idle?

Well I turn the car on and it dies immediately. I can rev it up but the RPM's go down without hesitation. It does this while in gear and in park. Let me know if you need any more details.

None of the warning lights came on at all.

i would say first check to see if there are any vacuum leaks. listen for a high pitched sound while someone else lets the car run. chances are, this is your problem, but if not then pull out your plugs and see how they look before buying new ones. if you have access to a multimeter or ohmeter, check the resisitance betweent the plug and coil side of the ignition wires before buying new ones. Your fuel filter could be clogged, but i would say if it is a fuel problem it could be your fuel pressure regulator, just because i had the same problem with my car a month ago. It wouldn't hold pressure at idle, and my pump was straining to keep the pressure up, but i heard it whining badly, so i dont know....but vacuum leaks are the biggie to check

Ok thanks...I'll go out and check on those things this morning.

Ok...sorry to bring this back up to the top, but...I replaced the plugs and wires. Now it idles right at 1000 RPM's but after a little while of light driving when I come to a stop it shuts off. :eek7: I got a new fuel filter which I'm having a load of trouble with. I can't get the nut on the top off even with an impact wrench and using a torch to heat it up (I know bad idea seeing that it's a fuel filter but I ran out of ideas). Also Gelman you said you had fuel pressure regulator problems, how hard are those to replace??? Also does anyone have any more ideas on what this could be. TIA.

its located on the fuel rail--by the injectors, its shaped kind of like a vacuum advance mechanism on a distributor. if you are having trouble getting the fuel filter off PLEASE DO NOT USE A TORCH!! lmao.... use a line wrench (flare wrench) and try to take it off. Also, are you turning it the right way? when it shuts off, does it just cut out or do the rpms drop then it shuts off? chances are your ignition is good, because it runs fine until the rpms drop. Check your coils just to make sure, i forget the exact resisitance there should be, but i can look it up if you need me to. And you say there are no cel's correct? I personally invested 400 dollars into a snap-on scanner...it has saved me tons of money in throw a part at the car repairs. your fuel system is most likely to blame though, just because it runs but then doesnt run. try the filter again, this time dont use a torch heh...good luck

I am not sure if the GSX is the same or even for the 95 but on mine you can slip a 19mm box wrench over the fuel filter (there is a spot for it) and then use another one on the nut. Then turn the one on the nut counterclockwise and the on on the filter clockwise.
USE PB BLASTER. And if it still does not come off let the PB sit over night.
Good luck

I am also having some idle problems. When i start the car, it idles around 2000 rpm. I was also having some misfire problems, so i changed the plugs and wires and now it doesnt misfire but the idle problem still stands. Also when im about to turn off the engine, the car idles from 2000 to 3000 back and forth until i shut off the engine. What do you think might be wrong with it?

no cel? my rpms jumped around a lot but not that much..that is most likely a leak somewhere...most idle problems are from vacuum leaks--proper idle should be around 6-700...i forget if these cars have idle adjuster screws or not..i have been drinking a little heh....:tipsy: :grinno: but yea....good luck read the rest of the posts on this topic and see if any of them apply to you

If the car idles high and surges its usually a vac leak. If it surges but sometimes idles normally, its typcially an issue with the ISC or closed throttle switch. Also be sure the BISS is adjsuted properly. This requires a scan tool or a logger that can disaply ISC position. I believe www.crebotech.com has some info on testing ISCs that I have found useful. Also, on www.vfaq.com, tehre is a matrix for what to check when you have idle problems and the probability of each.
The original poster seems to not be having idle problems, but stalling problems. I dont think thats covered in the vfaq, but chek anyway. Could be the ISC still.

I have a 95 Talon Esi and am having the same problem...sometimes it dies at first start then fires up
and it stutters under I hit the gas. I have put in new plugs bosch plat-2 and a new fuel filter..and yes it was a pain the neck
I think its the fuel pressure regulator but I am unsure still.
