double clutching is when u hit the clutch, shift to neutral, release the clutch, hit it again, complete the gear shift, then release the clutch again. it is generally not a useful technique in drag racing and will slow u down.

The funny thing is that the guy in Fast and the Furious was making fun of a guy because he didn't double clutch. Man that movie was way off.

No need to double clutch in any car made the last fifteen years.

well what was the point in it if slowed you down?
or did the older cars have differant gear boxes that are better when double clutched?

Double cluching would syncronize the transmision makeing it easer to shift. Now all manual transmisions are auto sync trani's. Using a manual transmision in a drag race is not the better of the two types. When you push the cluch in the power to the wheels is no longer giving any power, and you slow down. An automatic trani goes straight from 1 gear to the next with out loosing power to the wheels. You can shift a manual trani with out using the cluch but not recomended cause it'll tare up the trani and cluch.

guys,
double clutching now-a-days is like a speed shift, when it is reffered to in the movie, they mean this. to double clutch you have to work very fast, letting off the gas, pushing the clutch in, and movie to the next gear all happen basically at the same time, the releasing the clutch and putting the gass back on basically happens at the same time, more advanced drivers do this all the time without even knowing it. new stick drivers and non-racers, alot of the time will granny shift which is much slower and you lose much or your rpm's durring this time..

doesnt really sound like "double-clutching" to me, sounds more like "shifting fast"

Exactly, I have always called that speed shifting.

Double clutching is really only needed in large trucks while hauling a heavy load or in much older cars. It is when you push in the clutch shift into N the push the clutch in again and shift into gear. Not exactly fast now is it, hehe.

Thank god some one else noticed this in the movie. This was really the only part of the movie that really confused me. Glad I wasnt the only one.

Yea double clutching is mainly for downshifing, at least that is what I use it for. You double clutch on a downshift to match the revs in the lower gear and to take some load off of the syncros in the trans. You can also use it to slow down the car WAY faster or set yourself up to pull real hard out of a corner, also known as a heal-and-toe downshift.

Yeah I think what should have been said as opposed to double-clutching should have been power-shifting (shifting using the clutch but keeping your foot to the floor 1st to 2nd is easy 2nd to 3rd is more tricky but can be done) :)

double clutching helps me when its really cold outside and the tranny fluid is thick

prolly cause I have 330000 miles on my truck

YEs, you are right. Although shifting a tranny with a clutch will not tear up the clutch. the sound you hear grinding is really the syncros. The only way to do this is (on an older p.o.s. car) accelerate normally. let off the gas(don't touch the clutch)and gently pull the shifter out of gear and put pressure on it into the next gear u wanna go into. Whan it internals slow down enough, the shifter will slip right into gear. Double clutching is only necessary on tranny's without syncros. such as dog cut gear boxes and semi- trucks. And the above mentioned tactic was invented by truck drivers to avoid double clutching. Back in the day pro drag racers used it too. it was said that it sounded like and automatic equipped car with an extra gear. practice makes perfect
