Shift Kit

How would I remove a shift kit from the tranny in my camaro. I wouldnt mind leaving it in there but I dont like the high rpm's. When im going around 55-60mph its winding out at around 4100 rpms

Anyone have any ideas?

You would need some kind of a rebuilt kit to replace all the crap that replaced the stock setup. Maybe you could just adjust the shift points to something a little lower??

that doesnt have anything to do with the shift kit. that just controls the way the trnas shifts, meaning how if feels and how fast it shifts between gears. it does not control the RPM's at what your driving thats all gears. that means you would need to change your rear gears out to bring down the RPM's. ima suming you mean its running that RPM in drive when your just crusing, not like second gear or something.

There was nothing done to the rear-end it is still the stock 82 Z28 rear-end thats why I thought it was the shift kit since I've never seen a stock rear-end put out such high rpms. The tranny had a shift kit put in it, by the time i hit around 25 mph im in 3rd gear and thats it then the rpms just get higher. I'm afraid I might damage something in the engine if I continue to drive it being its my only drivable car at the time.

what tranny do you have? and do you know what gears your rearend has?

tardster
05-21-2004, 04:22 PM
They are both the original tranny and rear-end that was in the 82 Z28, just the person who started the project put a shift kit in it. All I know is its an 82 Z28 that had the 305 with the computerized carb or tbi in it.

it seems like its your gears but if its not then it doesnt make sence to me. without know what rear gears you have atleast, i dont know. if its not because of the gears then something in your trans is slipping. thats the only other thing i can think of.

Not sure man, I just know its the stock rear-end. Well plus it sucks cuz I can only get to about 90 mph, dont get me wrong I get there REAL FAST but I would get beat or blow it up if I tried to race it on the quarter mile

The stock rearend for that car would come with 2.73s so theres no reason why the gears would make that problem if they are original. I thought that by using different springs and crap you can get the transmission to shift at different rpms and also adjust the firmness of the shifts.

Oh, your car only has a 3 spd automatic doesnt it?? That could be a reason why it revs so high without an overdrive gear.

tardster
05-21-2004, 05:22 PM
Yep its just a 3 speed automatic..... but I didnt think it would put out that many rpms though.

it doesnt matter when it sifts because it would still be running the same RPM in whatever gear, in this case 3rd, no matter when it sifted into 3rd. if it sifts into third at 5 grand then you will for example be going 60MPH and the tach would read say 3 grand. but if it shifted into 3rd at 4000 then you would be doing say 50MPH at 2300RPM's so when he gets up to 3 grand again he will still be going 60 MPH. he is not talking about when it shifts he is talking about the what RPM it is tuning when he is going like 60 MPH. the shift points would NOT affect that.

im willing to bet that the rear gears have been changed. that the only thing that makes sence. you need to jack up the back of the car and take the rear cover off. then count the number of teeth on the ring gear and the pinion, or find where the numbers are stamped onto the outside edge of the ring gear. then you devide the bug number by ht little number and there is your rear gear ratio. like i said im willing to bet thats what it is. just becuase the rear end has not been changed does not mean that the gears have not been. i also have a 3 speed auto, TH350, posibly the same one you have but i dont know what tranny they put in those years, but at 60MPH in third i think its like 2400RPM's. that with 3.08 rear gears. if you do have 2.72's, and im sure they came with manny different gear combinations so for him to say thats what you have i dont believer him totaly, at 60 you should be turning something like 2200 RPM's or something. the only other thing i can really think of is are you runing really really small diameter tires or something? cuz other than that i would say its your rear gears.

I second that, higher RPMS at cruising is undoubtedly a low (hih numerically) rear-end.

haha... solution: 4th gen....

well what do u expect w/ 155hp?
a v6 4th gen will go about 125mph for the 3.4.. and even more for the 3.8... sad isn't it? :grinno:

155 hp? is that all you have? Daaaaaaaaaaamn I feel sorry for you.... :-)

Just jack the back up and rotate the driveshaft and see how many spins it takes to get the wheels to turn around once.

So I need to either get a differant tranny or taller gears?

it does not work that way. it depends on if its a open rear or if it posi or what. and its not even precise. it done corectly and you are accurate about it then you will get an acurate result. but thats the reason i said to take a remove the rear cover. its 100% accurate and not very hard. the hardest part pretty much is either jacking up the car, or pumping in the new gear oil.

So I need to either get a differant tranny or taller gears?
i would sugjest changing the rear gears. with an overdrive, for example, if you are tuning 4100RPM's at 60MPH, then with the overdrive you will be running 2870RPM's at 60MPH. thats using the 30%overdrive of a 700R4 witch is the more commen of the auto overdrives that prople use. i think you would be alot better off with changing gears, its not cheep but swaping an overdrive trans isnt either. but its up to you.

Well I have a tranny thats in the 88 camaro I bought a few weeks ago and its and auto w/overdrive but I wasnt for sure just what I should do.

incorrect, could be caused by several things, lack of overdrive, slipping transmission, worn out torque converter, poor idle adjustment, spinning rear tires ;) lack of overdrive could be a bad lockup converter switch (TCC) or a faulty fourth gear servo. any number of things.

LOL you need to relook at the pics in my sig if you think all I've got is 155hp. Thats a 350 bored 30 over with a 3/4 racing cam with a milodon gear drive, hooker shorty headers, and i think 202 heads (i think). Shes pushin some where roughly around 375 hp.... To bad I cant use all of it in longer runs instead of these little 1/10th mile shots.

very good ponts, i agree for the most part but...
no over drive(he has a 3 speed, there is no overdrive to not be working)
slipping transmission(the only other thing i could think of aside from gears)
worn out torque converter(yup, that too)
poor idle adjustment(how would that effect it. im just curiouse cuz i cant see how it would)
spinning rear tires(hes going 60 and im asuming he means just normal driving not to mention i dont think he has the power too)
faulty fouth gear servo(goes back to its a 3 speed)

i never asked but you do mean when your just normaly driving right? and not like the tires are spinning or something right. just when your crusing at about 55-60 your tach reads 4100RPMS or so.

LMAO...my first camaro was an 82 with the 2.5L/4 speed manual. And with premium gas at 2.20 a gallon I am pretty happy with my V6!

yeah good catch 68chevelle, i was just kinda throwin out all the possibilities for high rpms in general, but thanx for callin it so i dont confuse anyone here. didnt really think about that.

When I bought my rearend I turned the pinion yoke around until the axle went around one rotation. It went around about 3.25 times and the actual ratio is 3.27. After cleaning off the tag I could read it fine. It doesnt give you an exact number but it worked fine for me.

prob is prolly in the rear but tranny could be slipping i agree with the other responces, a very common rear are 3.23s just about everyone i know uses them in all years or camaro's and birds thats probly what you have

i agree. given that it is only a few days old but what is up -=camaro=-? this is atleast the seconds thread that you have posted in after a few days of being dead, and in them you have made a smart remark to someone. if your going to make a comment about someone or something atleast do it within 5 days of the last post otherwise leave it alone. but then again thats just my opinion.
