A few Golf questions

I'm new to VW's, and I just have a few general questions. I only have about $3000, and I'm thinking about getting an old Golf or a high-mileage Corrado and doing a 16v swap. 1)Are VW swaps for older cars the sort that are DIY for someone with limited mechanical knowledge, or do they have to be done professionally? 2) I hear that VW parts for older cars are expensive and hard to find. True? 3) I also hear that the G60 Corrado has reliability issues, and that all VW's in general suffer from electrical problems. Again, is this true or is it just anti-VW propaganda? I really appreciate any information you guys can give.

the older parts arent all that expensive really. u should deffinately have sum1 help u at the least who is a professional especially if ur just getting into VW as german cars are different from the american and japanese. but yes the electical has gone bad not often but every once in a while i suggest making sure everything there is coppesetic before moving on to the swap and all

It's a matter of location. The majority of the people on these boards are American, and in America, Japanese cars are more popular tuner platforms than their German counterparts. My roommate is Austrian, however, and he says that in that region, Golfs and Jettas rule the tuner scene.

really that would be pretty damn cool to see all those euros but by no means do i have a problem with japanese cars they have the same potential i just tend to like the look of a european car a lil more

I'm a Honda fan myself, but I think people underestimate the potential of some of the lower-end European cars such as Golfs and Jettas. I agree, it would be cool to see more of them around.

you should try finding help on the message boards at http://www.vwvortex.com that is the largest US based community board going right now... and it's going to be a much better resource for you then this one.
