Exposed Wheel Bearings

Can the wheel bearing get damaged by dirt and sand if it is exposed? Like if the car has wheel covers but they arent on the wheel?

Most vehicles have dust caps on the hubs where they are needed. If the car did not have any dust caps, odds are you have sealed bearings. The wheel covers are only for appearance they don't do a whole lot to protect the bearings on the car.
