Can't find where to attach wire for external tach on 1997 Ranger 4 cyl

ok, on my tach, i have 4 wires, one +, one -, one backlight +, and the tach -. Now just tap the - wire going to your coil. If you have C.O.P ( coil on plug ), it will be a little more difficult. you would have to tap the - side of each coil, put a diode in there to keep the power from going back to the wrong cylender, then hook all of the wires together and run it to your tach.

THANK YOU. Would you know how the tach -wire connects when the tach is part of the original equiptment dashboard ? Do they do the diode deal if it is C.O.P. ?? I was hoping that there was a connection that might be hidden in some cable that would have been used for the in dash tach had there been one...

only the new stuff is COP, they just use the crank position sensor for the new tachs.
