ladder rack for 86 chevy van

does anyone know if you can install a ladder rack which uses the gutter to clamp to on an 86 chevy van ? The passinger's side has a sliding door with a guard around the sliding track which seems to make it impossible to clamp to the gutter. Can this guard be removed or is it a necessary part of the sliding track? If this is so what type of ladder rack is recommended for this van ?
