Time ing chain going bad?

CLANK CLANK(left side of engine) CLANK CLANK -non-stop- (not too loud) but could be a serious problem... any little things i should check? before i dish out 600dallors just for part..- as i was told- and would that cause my 93 auto to stall at times?
