well Chris it all depends on who you talk too. If you talk to a GM rep they will tell you that the timing chain should be replaced at 100,000. However, In talking with Maaaaany cav owners who have well over 200,000 on their car, they have never replaced the timing chain. If the car makes it to 300,000 and it's still running or hasn't rusted out on ya change it then. I had a 94 cav that had 170,000 on it when I sold it and I never replaced the timing chain on it. From what I hear the new owner is still driving it back and forth to NYC daily. And that is about 110 miles one way from this area in PA.

The timing chains on the 2.2 are very reliable. For the Size of the engine it is pretty big.

Mine was sounding like bad lifters at 90K. Finally replaced it at 102K...

Well here's the odd-ball in the bunch. 94 2.2, 160,000 and the timing chain tensioner broke which broke the chain. I replaced the chain and it only lasted 10,000 miles and it broke, this time bending up most of the valves. Hopefully just a bad replacement chain. Will replace the head with one from a bone yard and see what happens. Great engine though!! 28 mpg all day long!

Not a mechanic, but thought I'd try to help. A friend has a '91 and it just quit running. It was getting fuel and spark, but wouldn't start. Pulled the valve cover and had someone turn it over...nothing moved!Just to let you know...this '91 model 2.2 timing chain lasted 267,000 miles before it broke!(Haven't got into the motor yet, so I hope it don't look too bad)...hope I helped!
