strange smell

I have a '91 4runner, 4wd v6. I've had it for about 6 months. On a recent trip I noticed a smell like propane when going up steep, long hills. This did not smell to me like catalytic converter smell, but I could be wrong. Also, I seemed to be getting a lot less power than I thought I should. Even after cresting a hill, on level ground, it seemed that it took a long time to get back up to speed. The water temp gauge stays the same the whole time. Any ideas as to what's happening? Thanks-

If is possibly that you are just noticing lower power due to high altitude. Have you taken the altitude into account in your power assessment? You will have less power at higher altitudes.

Did you use premium gas? You may get better power on hills using premium. If you use regular, your ECM may detect pinging and retard the timing when you are climbing a hill.

Don't forget, 3.4 L V6 is not overpowered.

Thanks, Brian, for your reply. I was using premium gas at the time. The engine is actually 3.0 L, I believe, and you're right, it doesn't have a lot of power. I'm thinking about an upgraded air filter and exhaust system to improve power. Can anything be done for about $600?

3.0 L - Sorry for the typo.
