I don't know that much about cars. My older car is a 93 Ford Taurus.
I want to get some general maintaince done. A local mechanic said overall the car looks good. He suggested I get a tune up which will consist of plugs, wires, distributer cap, distributer cap roter, PVC valve, fuel filter and cleaning the fuel system with "MotorVac". The total cost will be about $500. Any thoughts? Is this a good deal, or am I being ripped off? Thanks.

These things are regular maintenance items. If you have not had them replaced in a coulpe years than it may be a good idea. If your car runs well and doesn't seem to be going through gas badly, I wouldn't worry about it. The fuel system can be cleaned by adding fuel injector cleaner every oil change that is done. Cleaning it out with a machine is really just a cash grab. Put a bottle of injector cleaner in when you change your oil and you should be fine. You should shop around for prices on tune-ups when ever you are thinking about it. Actually, any service. In this time year lots of shops have tune-up specials that may be more cost effective. As a technician a rule of thumb I follow is spark plugs, fuel filter and P.C.V.(positive crankcase ventilation) valve every 50,000 kms and wires, cap ,rotor every 100,000 kms. But your cars manual will have the recommended service intervals. :sunglasse
