Check Engine Light On...Failed Smog

Two weeks ago the check engine light lit up on my 2000 4Runner SR5.
I brought it to the dealership and they tightened the gas cap and told me it would turn itself off within 7 - 10 days. Well...here we are 2 weeks later, and not thinking much about it, I took the 4Runner in for a smog test which, surprise, surprise, it failed.
I can't imagine that a simple twist of the gas cap could correct a check engine light. I thought they were just being lazy!
Anyone have a similar experience? Suggestions?

One of the primary reasons for the check engine light has been the malfunction of the Oxygen Sensor.
I had good luck with my Accord after replacing it; no more light!
Go by the dealer's part dept. and ask them the location of the sensor. See if you can remove and examine it(usually parts guys are very helpful and tell you what symptoms to look for).
The sensor runs about $130.00 but if this is the problem you might be in for a reasonably priced repair.
