Weird shifting i need help

Ive got a 93 dakota with a 3.9 and an auto w\ OD. my problem is when the transmition shifts out of gear the motor revs to about 4500 and then kicks into the next gear. and the first gear doesnt even work unless i put it there my self. i dont know if the transmition is goin bad or if i can adjust my band. i replaced the filter and fluid hoping that would be it but it and it didnt help. if anybody has ANY ideas let me know, please. i need to fix it so i can drive it with out worrying about it. and if anybody also has a transfercase for it I would be very interested in buying it.

Have you tried adjusting your throttle linkage to the transmission? I've had issues w/ my transmission on my '89 and found that helped narrow down my problems
