Is there anything in the automotive world more satisfying than a well-executed downshift?
At 1015 yesterday, I made the cleanest 4th-to-2nd downshift with the best rev-matching I think I've managed to date, just before a right-hander on the top of a downgrade freeway onramp.
Awesome! :sunglasse I can't recommend it enough!

Goddamn I love that feeling. 4th, clutch in, throttle, 3rd, clutch out, let the compression take over, repeat performance for second then nail the corner. :evillol:

real drivers don't use the clutch

...because real drivers can afford gearbox rebuilds :D

that is one part of it.. the other part is real drivers cannot afford to lose time waiting on the clutch.. to engage/disengage..

Its because "real-drivers" are using automatic transmissions...:evillol:

although there has been a re-birth of auto trans in drag racing.. we were all commenting on the thrill of down-shifting in a real car with a real transmission.. as opposed to your seemingly prefered slush-box

Dayna, didn't you already partake in the butchering of one thread tonight? (with a little help, obviously)

am i not allowed to state my opinion?
Anyway, you guys are helping..
besides.. anyone who has ever experienced the feeling that caused Jay to start this thread would be just as defensive about people bringing up auto's here..
As you know freakray, I own a scoobie too.. just hearing the boxer rumble and rev as i perform this same manuever daily on a hard sweeping right hand turn on the way to work everyday.. I am sure you know the feeling..

Now that we have finished patting ourselves on the back, try doing the perfect downshift with a Cummins 855 diesel and an Eaton RoadRanger trans, with a bad clutch brake, pulling 70,000 lbs, while eating Krispy Kremes finest and NOT spilling your coffee.
Oh yes, extra points if you do all this while talking on the cell. :lol2:

Crap I should call the Best Motoring drivers to tell them to stop using the clutches when they race.
Man and I thought they were profesionals, i'm so disapointed in them. :disappoin
I say lets make a fund to send dayna in japan to teach them proper driving techniques.

You beat me to it!
Im forunate enough to have never driven a roadranger, but I estimate I make close to a thousand gear changes a day, all of them clutched and rev matched to perfection! (if not I have to pic my load up off the floor).
But even making that many gear changes a day, I still get satisfaction from that perfect moment, when your level of braking, gear selection and steering input lead the truck around a corner in one smooth movement, and lets you exit right in the sweet spot of the torque curve.
The day I cease to enjoy driving is the day I'll stop.

Yeah, I know the feeling of a well timed down shift, and yes I know the rumble of the boxer....and yes I love that sound!

these threads are getting better and better.
just because we can shift without using the clutch doesn't mean we will.
