Amp not working

I just received a 12' O Series (dual 4) from eD, hooked it up to my amp, and it won't play. I checked & rechecked all wiring from the amp to the sub, and everything, but it still does not play...only, when I turn the car on, it plays for a split second, then the status light immidiatly goes red, and it will not play at all afterwords, so I know that the sub is okay. Even without anything hooked up, the amp still has a red status light (is supposed to be blue). I figure the ground is bad, but I did have a sub with the same amp and wiring before this, and it played fine. Any ideas?
btw, I have an Audiobahn HQ4125 amp (2x500W RMS @ 2Ohms/1000x2 @ 1Ohm) and am giving the sub 500 watts.

try turning the gain down, like all the way down, then turn it up slowly
and recheck your wiring, fuses, that happen to my friend, but i found out that he had a really cheap amp (DHD amp) and he got a new amp, everything worked good

Yes I tried that, too - turned all the gains completely down, sub controls on the head unit down, all bass on equalizer down, and still no go. I checked each fuse on the amp, all where good, and the in-line one is good as well, obviously as the amp turns on. But, the same thing happens reguardless of whether or not I have a sub or anything hooked up - the amp is okay for less than a second, and then immediatly goes into a protection mode.

Mine does that when the power and remote solder on the circuit board touches...because Ive had to fix it once and if they cross over thats all I get. Who knows, weird shit can happen to amps.

Is the amp still getting power, caus i thought i had the same problem once, the light still came on saying that it was getting power but the fuse ends solderrd themselves to the side so no power got through. So try changing fuses, probably not it but worth a try??

Yeah, I'll try replacing the fuses - got some extras lieing around. I doubt it is it, since the sub hits as soon as the car is on and stops, but hey, I waited a month and a half for this sub. It WILL work.
Hmm...I still have my old amp, maybe I should hook that one up and see if it works?

It sounds like you need to go get smaller fuses on your power wire. If your fuse is to big on the power wire then it sends to much power to the amp. The amp is programmed to turn off if it receives to much power. Could be your subs are trying to pull to much from the amp??

never heard that one before, don't know how much I would believe it. If the amp isn't powering on, unhook the subs and try again. also, do yourself a favor and buy a voltmeter.

No, the fuses are fine - I've had a sub hooked up to this before (plus a smaller fuse would just blow) power draw from the amp is fine, 1 sub that needs about 500W is receiving 500.

Does that amp really put out 2x500W RMS @ 2Ohms and 2x1000 @ 1Ohm, or is it 1x500 and 1x1000?

it is 1x500 and 1x1000, they screwed up the specs, I have talked to audiobahn about it before. It is a mono amp anyhow.

? The amp I have is here:
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=13511
If it is mono, then what channels would I use to get the 500x1/1000x1?
****er didn't come with a manual. Anyways, before I tear my car apart in fury, anyone else got any ideas on what the problem may be?

Hm
how do you have it wired to the sub and how is the sub wired?

I've tried it all - parallel, series, and wiring each voice coil to a seperate, unbridged channel

If you unhook the sub completely, does the amp still go into protection?
TFFantasy44

...yup - that is what I am worried about

any chance you have a volt meter?
have you tried replacing the fuse in the power wire?

No volt meter, but I was planning on buying one today. The fuse in the power wire looks fine, it is a 150A ANL fuse, and the only other ANL fuse I have is 200...maybe I will try it and if it works, get a new fuse for it.
sr20de4evr

ANL should be fine, sometimes AGU fuses (the glass tube ones) can break loose and just stop working, even though they look perfectly fine from inspection. If that happens the amp will go into protection because of low voltage whether you have subs connected or not, mine did it a while ago and it took me the longest time to trace it down to the fuse. But I've never heard of ANL having that problem, by nature of their design it just shouldn't happen like it can with AGU.

That is what I figured. I will go see if I can get ahold of a volt meter and start checking things. Do you think it could be the rca cables came out from the head unit, or got pinched somewhere?
sr20de4evr
05-20-2004, 02:28 PM
That could cause it to play for a second and then go out, but it wouldn't send the amp into protection, so I doubt that's the problem.

Hmm. Maybe it just gives a red status light because there is no signal going to it? Ah well, I got ahold of a volt meter, so I'll have to go out and check the wires for it sometime when it's not raining (I hate nebraska)

Have you had any luck with this? I have a audiobahn amp that the red status light is on as well. i have only had it a year so this should not be happening.

Wow this is almost 2 years old. It's amazing.
It's even more amazing that I'm actually replying.
Anyways, it was blown, for me anyway. Check that the ground didn't come loose or anything, and if that's the case, I took the cover off of mine and took a look inside, and part of the circutry was black. So yeah, it ruined.
On another note, I've had a nine.1 (www.edesignaudio.com) for a little over a year I believe and have had NO problems at all. 1200W+ into 1ohm, runs about $350. Look into it, you won't be dissapointed.

sounds like one or both of the coils on the sub is shorted out
