Driving without the folding top cover

I have only had my 2002 TT convertible for a couple of weeks and am wondering if anyone drives their TT with the top down, but without installing the folding top cover (boot). If I drive with the top down I am pretty religious about also installing the cover because it just looks a lot better. Sometimes I get lazy and do not want to install the cover though, but I make myself do it anyway. The owner's manual has a warning saying not to drive the car with the top down unless the cover is installed, but the manual is overcautious sometimes. Is there any danger of the wind catching the top and damaging it if the cover is not installed? Does anyone drive their TT without installing the cover?

my friend has a 04 tt roadster and we drove it with the top at at the max (130mph) with it down and it did ok.

Yeah - I made that post when I had not had the car all that long. I was not worried about driving with the top down. I was worried about driving with the top down and the boot NOT installed. I gave up on installing the boot (cover) and have driven it at better than highway speeds without the boot. No problems.
