Trans options for B16A JP VS USA spec

looks like Im going to swap a B16A in my 95 coupe in a few weeks

one of the things Im still poundering is what trans to go with I was told the stock JDM B16A1 trans will sit around 4500RPM at around 65mph

I can get a US teg trans for the same price as the jdm trans

what do you guys know about them? one thing nice about the JDM trans is LSD but knowing my luck I would get a non LSD trans....

Not all JDM trans are LSD-equipped.

Plus..the B16A1 tranny won't work with your car.

Your's is hydraulic tranny - the B16A1 is cable.

Go for the GSR, (99-00) Si, Type-R, or JDM 92-95 SiR tranny.

where did you hear it wont work for my car? yes hydro VS cable but thats why they make a kit to change it over

yes its not as good as a B16A2 but if you set it up right you can't tell anything dif from a hydro clutch setup

if anyone does not like the feel of there B16A1 clutch setup they should check this site out http://www.crxguru.com/hydro_brac.htm the guy that makes them is going to do my swap he seems to have a really good head on his shoulders and to me its worth the extra money to do it right
and not have to miss any days of work

on the FAQ page they have stuff about trans one of the things said was this

B-series Cable type tranny. (About 90% of the time, the Y1 cable tranny's are the LSD equipped ones)

Y1 is from a 89-91 Civic/CRX SIR

anyone else on this subject?

That's bullshit about the Y1 tranny being LSD equipped 90% of the time. It was an option that came with the ABS equipped (EF9 SiR II) only or in the race spec SiR (stripped down). Neither my car or Moppies has a LSD - strange that we both lucked out along with a few other SiR owners I've spoken to. Likewise with the EF8 CRX. Going through front cuts at the wreckers, I've seen 1 LSD equipped EF8 out of about 20 EF8/EF9 cuts. I think the person who gave you that info is very misguided.

I'd like to see a Y1 in an '89 Civic BTW - the SiR wasn't built until '90.

.... no such thing as a B16a1

:)

heheh - I know - but ppl use it as a reference to distinguish it from the 5G SiR motors :) You could call it a B16A-501XXXX engine if you wanted - but that's going a tad overboard :p

I just think it's a bit annoying calling it the 5,000,000 Series B16A or the 1,000,000 series B16A :D

Or..we could just call 'em the S1 and Y1 B16As :D

And, i know where the Y1 comes from :D

Anyways - why would you buy a B16A without a tranny?

just get a full B16A2 swap from www.redime.com/swaps (PH member Sparq - contact him) for $2800 with EVERYTHING included (plus shipping included in the price too!) -- tell him Sean sent you :D

Im paying 2900 bucks and getting the swap done with a warranty on labor from a speed shop thats why Im going with the B16a as far as not getting a trans it comes with one but the guys there said it will have a much higher RPM on highway drives
if I wanted to go with a US Teg trans I have the option to for no extra cost if not the stock trans will stay on the engine I do ALOT of highway driving I use to put 160miles a day on my civic now its more like 50 but sooner or later it will go back up

also I call it a B16A1 becuase thats what most JDM engine webpages list it as

as far as saying 90% of the trans come with LSDs I got that from a trans guide from THIS site its not my own info its from a tech webpage
I copy and pasted that from the webpage

so if you guys had to go with the b16a engine would you want to keep the stock trans or go with a US spec trans

Keep the stock transmission. One simple reason: The gear ratios are designed to match the engine. The EF SiR ratios keep the engine turning at higher RPM - at 110km/h my engine is doing 4100 RPM in 5th. This is very acceptable as it gives you good launches against other cars. I can round up VTiR 'tegs with it - despite them having a lot more power (DOHC VTEC B18s). I can't touch an ITR with it though.

This site is wrong then about the transmissions - go to Honda's Japan site and get someone to translate it and you will see it says that the LSD is optional. Talk to people who have lived in Japan and owned SiRs and they will call BS on 90% too.

Have you got a link to the thread with that info in it? Ill go correct them. :D

As Setanta said the LSD is only an option, and is extremly rare, but if you find an importer with one pay the extra money, it will be worth it.
On a slippery wet road even with Uniroyal rain tyres I can light the frount up in 3rd if I really want to, and wheel spin in 2nd when the VTEC engages is also common (especialy when cornering).

http://tiiite.b16a.com/LSDcheck!.htm

about halfway down the page it says this

I've never seen this with my own eyes before, but a fellow hybrider from another country sent me this pic. It's an LSD stamp on a B-series Cable type tranny. (About 90% of the time, the Y1 cable tranny's are the LSD equipped ones) He said his motor came from Japan 'as-is'. The stamp is on the topside of the tranny casing, right under where the Vtec solenoid area.

maybe Im reading it wrong but to me it comes off as 90% have LSDs

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t15933.html is the link on the fourms look under Transmission B-series Gear Ratios

once you get to the b series click on the LSD link on that page

and it takes you to the first one I got the info from

if I go with the US Teg spec trans are they cable or hydro? never thought about that Hmmmmm that could be a plus side

The Tiiite site is normaly really really good, but since its written by Americans in America it suffers a problem faced by most American based information sources; a lack of awarness of the outside world, and so often relys on second hand information.
Ill email the webmaster and tell him.

But otherwise 90% of the information on that site is correct, and I have to say its one of the best B16a sites out there.
(one other correction, the Type-R civic, (6g) came with LSD, and it was an option on all the other 5g, and 6g SiR models.)

I was looking around the http://www.mmrusa.com/phantom1.htm
yesterday and they sell LSD 259.95 do you know anything about them?

I wonder how hard it would be to install if you would have to pull the trans apart... hmmmm

I have a feeling (but am not sure) that the 'teg was cable driven B16A. I looked at our 1G tegs and they are cable - but they are also ZC powered. It stands to reason that the B16A gearbox was cable given that it was tith the 4G -> SiR transition. But... this is only guesswork.

Well the integra is really just an over weight Civic, so they share a lot of the same mechanical layout.
The 1st and 2nd gen Integras, like the 3rd and 4th gen Civic on which they are based use a Cable Clutch. While the 3rd and 4th gen Integra use a Hydrolic clutch, just like the 5th and 6th gen Civic on which they are based.
So any teg before 92 uses a Cable clutch, and any teg after 92 uses a Hydrolic clutch.
