Ignition System upgrade

I want to upgrade my ignition system. I am getting the MSD SCI ignition box, and I am upgrading to bigger plug wires. What else do I need? I have a 99 EX Coupe. I looked for the coil and have never seen one for my model and year. I think it was the Blaster Coil they only had for the 95 models. Do I even need an external coil? Someone told me in order for me to get the most out of putting the ignition box and fatter wires I need to do more than that. Is this true? Also, is this even worth it as far as a daily driver? Any power gained through this, or would I better off investing my money in better engine parts?

Get the MSD ignition SCI only if you plan to turbo, otherwise, it's overkill for stock.

I recommend you get the MSD Blaster 2 coil and the MSD modified ignition cap, and some low resistance ignition wires for your stock engine.

wow thanks for explaining that, I have always wondered about some hight power upgrades and how they effects the rest of the stock engine. Thats overkill, thats good to know.

Thx

Ok, thanks for the explanation. I will try that setup that you recommended. I dont plan on going turbo in the near future so that info is going to be very helpful

What should i get for my car integrasedan? Recommend the MSD SCI ignition, especially if you plan to put more boost on your turbo to ensure no misfires in high revs. In addition to the external coil, cap and low restistant ignition wires. Performance coil ensures the energy from SCI or stock ignition, gets transfer to plugs better than stock coil.

I will try that setup that you recommended.

Here are some links of modified distributor caps so you can run an external performance coil: MSD caps (http://www.msdignition.com/sci_8.htm) or Crane Cams ignition cap (http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?show=browseParts&lvl=4&prt=2012) get any low resistance ignition wires you like. Doesn't really add horsepower to stock engines, but you should notice smoother engine, better throttle response with an external performance coil.

YellowITR479, go with Integrasedans suggestion.

Mattcivic, I'm going to disagree with even spending the money on the coil and cap. Your stock ignition system is MORE than adequete for a stock, or even mildly built motor. One thing you can do to help smooth it out is upgrade your grounding system, by this I don't mean spend a hundred bucks on a kit, but rather go to a stereo store, and get some nice thick power wire adn some eyelets, solder the eyelets on and replace all the grounds in the engine bay, should run you about ehhhh $30ish.

do you recommend solid or stranded wire?

Um, whatever typical power wire is, so I would guess stranded, but it resistance is less through solid, than go for that, but I haven't seen sold wire in those gauges. Not much of a stereo guy though, I got my tunes, and that's about where my interest stops :) on the tech side.

I would probably say get some 4 gague wire because i think 0 gague would be overkill

I never thought about just getting power wire from a stereo shop and upgrading the ground system with that. That will defenitely be my next project. I would also agree that 0 gauge wire would be overkill. I am thinking that I will stick with the stock ignition system, but time will tell.

I definatly agree :) I just did my own ground system kit using 4 gauge scoshe efx2 oxygen free power wire. I used rockford fosgate 4 gauge gold plated crimp rings. I also replaced the negative battery clamp with Rockford Fosgate gold plated w/ two 4 awg outputs. You can use wire with more strand count, but mine works fine.

Heres what i notice: Cleaner, stronger stereo performance. Faster, easier engine start up. Smoother idle, tranmission shifts. Better throttle response. The power windows roll down faster. Haven't measured fuel milage yet.

THis has got to be the hottest mod right now, it's so easy and cheap, and actually works.
