I HAVE A 2000 DAKOTA, WHEN I HIT ABOUT 90MPH THE ACCELERATOR HITS THE FLOOR AND THE ENGINE CUTS OUT. THE VEHICLE WON'T ACHIEVE ANY MORE SPEED. I AM TOLD THIS IS A "GOVERNOR". RECENTLY WHILE TRAVELING IN A REMOTE AREA I WAS TICKETED FOR 106 MPH (BUT NOT ARRESTED) I WAS ON CRUISE AND SET FOR 77 MPH. THE OFFICER CALLED ME "HONEY" AND PRACTICALLY CRAWLED THROUGH MY WINDOW. CALIBRATION IS ACCURATE AND I THINK I AM GETTING PUSHED AROUND BECAUSE I AM FEMALE AND THE THE HOUR WAS LATE AND THE AREA REMOTE. I WANTED SOME INFO AND SPECS ON THIS ENGINE DEVICE BUT DODGE CLAIMS THAT IT IS "PRIVILEGED INFORMATION". HOW WEIRD IS THAT? CAN ANYONE PROVIDE ME INFORMATION/FACTS ON HOW THIS THING WORKS. PLEASE HELP! [email protected]

I talked to a dodge mechanic who told me my 2001 r/t wouldn't go faster than 115mph from the factory ECU. I don't know if it applies to 2000 or not. I know that doesn't help your defense but that is what I know...Good Luck

I have a 3.9 and a 5 speed in a fullsize '97 Ram and it goes faster than 115 mph. I know, I don't believe it either. It goes that fast though, I swear.

Ok, now I'm going to ask the stupid question:

Why do you need to go 90, 106 or 115 MPH anyway?
It's not a race car.

And oh, by the way, the computer will shut down around 90-120 MPH like it's designed to. It simply depends on RPM and the speed sensor, so It doesn't really know when you're at exactly 120MPH or even 90.

Does any of you have a concept of the inadequate handling of these trucks at 100MPH?

And I don't care Who you are, driving at or close to 100MPH on public roads, You're going to harm yourself, or someone not so stupid as to drive that fast.

And, Bleed, that goes for Canada too, It might be cold, but there's still speed limits up there!

I only do stupid things like that when it's 3 in the morning and there's nobody else around, on a straight, smooth piece of highway. It handles actually pretty good at that kind of speed, and I just like driving fast. I know it's a truck but sometimes when you haven't got a fast car, you just find yourself driving fast on whatever you're driving at that moment. I'm 19 and I don't know much I guess, all I know is I like to drive fast, and I try to get away with it as best I can...

The fastest speed limit here is 62 mph. It's good enough. When I drive to work I usually do about 55 mph for gas mileage anyway. I'm never in any hurry to get to work.

I think at 3 a.m., I'd be worried about Deer, or even a Moose in the road....:) But hey, we've all done it... It's just stupid, and we all, (hopefully) know it!

I hit a deer in fall 2002. I've paid my dues. I'm aware of what can happen.

Fun is fun, there are risks I'm willing to take.

Moose are so bad! They destroy entire pickup trucks!

Well, I live in sunny Southern California so I can't help but drive the way I do.(They made me this way).I know my 99 R/T cuts out at 120m.p.h. and it still has pedal left...If you're psychotic you can get a programmer to reprogram the brain and take it off from what I hear.:evillol:

If you do much traveling in the US , you will find some areas that going 90 + is no big deal. Two years ago while traveling to LA CA, the center lane on I-5 was moving at 94mph and the fast lane was at well over 100mph. If the Governer on my Grand Caravan topped out at 90mph, I would have had a major problem on the Interstate. There are some other deserted stretches of highway that I have driven at 135-150mph (not in my Minivan) and never had a car approach from the other direction or caught up to any car.

I know this has already been addressed, but I've had my Dak up to 116 when the governor shut it down. I too must admit it was very smooth and was still accelerating when it shut off the fuel. I was on a stretch of straight freeway, no one around, dry roads and broad daylight... no worries: I just wanted to see how fast it could go and IF the governor did indeed shut it down... it is and it did LOL!

I've been pulled over and harrassed by cops about 100 times and only have 3 tickets in 24 years (for stupid things - the cops just wanted to assert their power over me, I'm certain):If I get a ticket for something I DID do, then that's the risk I took. Have fun but watch out for others! Besides, 'stupid' is arbitrary.

Ok...just a small comment.....the engine does not cut off.....the ecy limits the amount of fuel that is going in there. cuts like 75 percent or so...thats all. Sorry, i had to say something about that.

For what it's worth, the reason there is a "governor" as everyone is calling it,is so you do not exceed the speed rating of the tires that the vehicle was originally equipped with

LOL...while my husband was testing out his new computer he happened on this old post of mine. I had to laugh at some of the responses. It reminded me of the game you used to play as a kid where you whispered something in the next player's ear and he passed it on..in the end it ususally does not resemble the original statement. I am greatly amused by all the comments related to what appears to be criticism of speeding.......

>>>did anyone notice in the original post that I was set on cruise control at 77 ( and carrying about 3000 pounds of lumber in the bed, to boot)??????????? Sure I got it up to 90 a couple of times on the open highway just to see what it could do when I first got it...never for more than a couple of minutes though. That was waht made the whole thing so ridiculous! Cruise control set at 77, got ticketed for 106...and even proved the vehicle could not do 106....the test technician at the r"acing" shop said it was the fuel pump that cuts out.

What this amounted to was a hick cop with a need to ticket.....even if he had to lie. Update: had the vehicle tested (dynomonitor?) at a racing shop and found that it was INCAPABLE of doing the ticketed speed and brought the certification with me. Kangaroo court in a poverty-stricken town, the judge did not even care! My husband and I were the only people in the court actually wearing shoes..except the officers!!!! There are some instances were justice is not just.

The vehicle was one nightmare after the other. Electrical system went haywire, stationary back window leaked (not installed properly) and destroyed the interior 3 months after I bought it, AC died at 20,000 miles and it took 3 visits to Dodge to fix it, brakes would lock at 35mph braking....got a Tundra....more power, more room, more features...less orignial cost even 4 years later! Have had it for 3 years and have not put one dime into it other than general maintenance! Buy Toyota!
