Scary Fast

Hey all, i wanted to share something that happened to me yesterday.
I was driving south on the 400, 2 hours or so north of Toronto on the weekend, coming back from a buddy's place. I got through Barry and the pace of traffic was picking up from the limit of 100km/h to around 120km/h as it always does.
As i got through the town, i needed to do some passing, so i put my foot into it and got up to 135km/h and starting passing people. After i got by the 2 big trucks i initially wanted to pass and few other slow cars, i stopped passing people, but not by choice.
What i mean is that traffic just all of a sudden started speeding up.
Alot.
Now granted, we were going down a hill to start with, but i look down and my speedometer is buried at it's limit of 140km/h (this means i'm doing at least 150km/h as the speedo is out by 10 clicks) and I'M now the guy that's being passed...by the traffic flow!
Here i am flying so fast i can't register the speed anymore, and there's cars flying by me in the left lane, there's cars creeping by me in the right lane, and i'm stuck in the middle lane going like hell not even knowing my speed and still getting passed!!!
Let me tell you, when a car the size of mine is going that fast and still being passed, that's scary as hell.
So what i was eventually able to do was just move into the far right lane and turn on my hazards and slow down to 120km/h. Travelling that fast on a 100km/h road with all that traffic is just asking to die!
Anyone else have a scary experience like this one?? :22yikes:
My other point to posting this thread is to remind everyone to please please please use caution when racing around other traffic...i've done it myself, but when traffic is tight, don't keep chasing the stupid SOB; it's not worth the worst possible outcome.
Thank you.

happens all the time around here. if my conversions are right, that means you were going around 90-95 mph. on a good day i'll cruise at 85mph on the freeway and farther south, its usually more like 90-95. pretty fast for normal traffic but you get used to it after a while

Conversions are about right, it's about a 70 to 75 mile an hour road, on which i was traveling at LEAST 95-100 miles an hour, and i was the slow one!
That's sick!

That would suck if you were going about 120mph w/ the trafffic and the speed limit was 70. Yeah 50mph over.... your license would be toast. :)

well atleast the flow of traffic didnt' short stop on each other, that would be really scary esp in a big car like yours.

those drum brakes wouldn't slow down anything that heavy at those speeds.......they would be like a train trying to stop on a dime.

Anyone in California who has ever driven on Interstate 5 through the valley knows what it's like....the CHP won't even lift an eyebrow unless you are doing 100 or over....the speed of the flow of traffic is insane. My bro once went 120 mph for 55 consecutive miles on that freeway.

Ah, I love Canadian driving laws.
Speed limit is posted limit or 80% of traffic flow. Usually when I go there it's with a bunch of people headed to Mosport, where in a convoy of 8-10 vehicles, it's a big enough group where we are the flow of traffic.

That's what scared me! The speed is always of concern when you're surrounded by other cars going fast, but someone doing something stupid that requires stopping short...

Actually the brakes are pretty good...i stand on them and they lock and as long as the road is dry, she stops alot faster then most other sedans with ABS.
The problem with this braking is the damn semi trucks...that's the other thing that was scary. The main thing that creeped me out was the Greyhound bus and the Yukon Denali that went flying by me doing at least 170km/h.

Going 100mph doesn't sound bad at all :grinno: As long as the flow is going that fast and people aren't right on everyone elses ass - it sounds like fun

I am usually the one in the fast lane passing people. The speed limit on I-15 in Utah, for the most part, is 65 MPH. I usually go about 75-80 MPH without a problem, rarely do people pass me. However, a while back when I still had my Jeep I had to drive out to Denver to pick up my parents. Their timing belt had snapped and they needed to get home. I never drove the Jeep on the freeway because it is pretty slow. I didn't have a choice this night and pulled onto I-25. The speed limit on I-25 is 75 MPH so everyone is going around 85 MPH. The problem with that is I get on in the slow lane and my tach is almost buried and I can only muster 75 MPH. So I stay in the slow lane, but people and mostly semis come up on my ass then pass me. Some of them even honked their horns. It was more annoying that scary. I would have gone faster if I could have.

Going fast downhill is a thrill but if you don't have the stopping power that is one scary ride.

I know exactly what you are talking about, I drive on the 400 from Toronto to Barrie every day.
I go in the opposite direction of rush-hour traffic and regularly cruise at 130 km/h and if traffic is moving at a quicker pace its closer to 150 km/h.
Funny part is at these speeds there are still people who fly by me.
I'm never late for work though. :grinno:
