well . . . I should say that the driver intended for others to think they were seeing a Delorean . . .

I say that because, although visually the car looked correct, it was PAINTED . . . red no less.

That didn't seem right to me . . . I figured anybody with interest enough to want to own a Delorean would have the sense to know it's something special in it's natural state, or would at least have the respect to try to keep it in it's natural state. I dunno . . .

I figured it was probably a kit . . . either way, it's a disgrace, if you ask me . . .

Actually, I've heard of people painting them before. My fiance' knew a guy with a yellow one. He also had a steel one, too.

Agree with you on that one i-rebel....you dont paint a Delorean.

S2000,

Didn't it look real funny though? Something about the shape, design of the car makes it look a little overwhelming when you add color to it . . .

Some people just have no respect . . .

WO! A painted Delorean!? Next time you get a chance take a picture and post it in the funny pages:bloated:

What was the driver thinking?!

Got a friend who is a big time Delorean lover, if I recall correctly he has gone through 3 and is restoring his 4 one now. Limited edition model with a turbo. We have to pick on him cuz it came with an automatic:D but his soon to be wife likes it:p

I know another guy at work who drove his Delreans passenger door into the side of his garage with the door open:eek:

Took him forver to replace it. At least that was an accident, painting it requires you to turn your brain off.

Stupid:flipa: stupid:flipa: stupid:flipa:

IMO, they actually don't look bad painted. I wouldn't do it just because it's such a rare and classic car in just steel, but color can really bring out the lines. I guess the factory originally planned on painting some, if not all. Apparently about 1000 or so of the '81s were painted from the factory. There is a white one for sale in one of my duPont Registry's. They also made 3 (4?) 24K gold plated ones.

If you paint it, then the flux capacitor wont be able to efficiently distribute the 1.21 gigawatts throughout the stainless steel body, rendering the DeLorean incapable of time travel!!!!

I have seen three over the past two weeks, all steel. My sister was dating a guy that had one....he went to a drive-thru and couldn't reach up to the window to get his burger, so he opened the door:eek: It hit the brick, but didn't scratch it too bad. All I can stay is stupid, stupid, stupid...

There are 3 for sale in the local AutoTrader.

Ooo...that makes me cringe no matter what car it is...I hate it when they get hurt. :(

That's one problem with the gullwing doors, though. With the way the bottom of the door is shaped and it's size, you cannot make the entire window go down, so only a very small section opens, similar to a Countach or Subaru SVX.

Heep's right. The factory authorized a few to be painted. I think they were 1982 and 1983 models, though. A handful of 1981 models were gold-plated and sold through the American Express catalog. And not a flux capacitor among them.

Heck, if somehow fate left a DeLorean on my driveway, I would most definately replicate the Doc's work. It would be my tribute to the '80's. Great Scott!

No one is quite sure if there are 3 or 4 gold plated D's. Most think three, but a fourth is rumoured. There is one of them for sale in my 1988 duPont Registry, around the east coast I think.

Another is located in a bank in Texas (I think it's Texas). The onwer of the bank bought it new, planning to make big money off of it because of it's sure-to-be-collectible properties. However, instead of selling, he's kept it inside the bank building on display. The car has 0 miles, the engine has never been started. It was rolled into the bank. There is a site somewhere about the gold D's...I'm too lazy to find it now, but it's an easy find with any search engine.

Over the last few weeks I've been seeing a DeLorean under a cover parked in the K-Mart Parking Lot. What do they sell for? I would guess around 20K, but I'm not sure.

Heep

Good guess! 20K is just about right, that's pretty well the average.

The bank in Texas has one and the National Auto Museum in Reno, Neveda has the other. Someone thought Delorean painted these, wrong. The two gold plated cars was for an American Express promotion. All other Deloreans are stainless steel silver. Personally, I don't like them painted. The stainless steel body is part of the history. It is also one of the major draw backs due to the weight and it is a pain clean.

Heep
10-31-2001, 12:08 AM
Yes, they can be a pain to clean...the only car that you clean with kitchen sink cleaner!

I remember reading somewhere that turpentine gets marks off as well, again, the only car you'd dare use turpentine on

Delorean's are badass just as they are. My delorean is painted (previous owner had it done, and it was the only DMC for sale within 200miles) and I think that it looks cooler than with plain stainless steel. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the fact that I have a painted Delorean, but almost everyone I've met has said it looks better painted than stainless.

I went to a Honda parts place the other day, and noticed a Delorean parked on the street a little farther down. So, I pulled ahead to check it out. Then I looked around to see 9 Deloreans. Wow!!! :D :D :D Well, turns out there's a Delorean place two doors down from the Honda place. Good to know. :)

BTW, 1 of the 9 was red. :flash:

If you buy one these Deloreans you will be going to the parts warehouse all the time. Interesting looking cars, but not built to last. These Deloreans can be money pits. This is true of many unique cars.

There are enough painted De Loreans for sale that one should NOT paint one that is currently Stainless Steel. I think the car looks good either way, but if you've got the stainless now... PLEASE don't change that. Just go out and buy one that is already painted!

Good idea!

I owned two at one point. I got rid of the Stainless Steel one because modding that would have been blasphemous! It was showroom fresh.

The painted one is definitely more fun (at least to me, since I like mods).

Hello all

I'm new here and very stunned to see that some people think it's OK to paint a DeLorean...

For me it's the death of the car . The cars character above all is about the stainles steel and the gull wings IMHO.

I live in sweden and we have about 50-60 DeLoreans here but about a half of them is not in traffic. Just to "look at" at some carshops and so on. There is also some difficulties to take them in her and have them into traffic.

If you look at my profile I have one. As of today that is not really the truth. BUT i'm very near. you know the bank and the money... I'll be bacxk in two weeks to tell you...

The price here in sweden for the car I'm about to buy is 20.300$
The car is in very good driving shape but not for extensive exhibitions at meetings.
36000 miles and everything in the original shape.
VIN #1598 (with the old hood and the gas lid)

Please respond with comments.

I think they look better painted - never liked silver cars anyway - plus that stainless steel must be hard to keep bright and shinny esp if you live in a city with all that pollution corroding it.
No - that yellow colour (or any bright colour) makes it look like the supercar it is. :lol2:

Have always liked the polished look as well. There was one at the DeLorean Car Show last summer that was partially polished:

If you are going to start a good DeLorean collection though don't forget about one of the Gold cars - can't beat a 24-k gold plated DeLorean!

Sorry I didn't read all the posts. just the first and last page. so it may have been mentioned but if not.... some of the painted deloreans have been in accidents and the owner couldn't afford new panels. since body filler was used, the car got painted. for example a flawless left fender for a DeLorean is a couple of thousand. There was an error when they were making them and not as many were produced. most of the body panels aren't easy to come by anyways. those are not something that have been reproduced since the original body dies were destroyed.
