How to remove stock DIN radio

I recently aquired a 1992 PA with the stock AC Delco cassette player. and I was wondering how to remove it and install an aftermarket cd player? does it require removing the whole dash? and about how long should this job take?

Malibu- I can change a radio in under 8 minutes, but I've done this about 20 times. first, remove the woodgrain trim alll along the lower dash. This trim hides some screws. Before you take those out, bend up a wire clothes hanger so that it looks like a "V" with little bends on the end, and use it to remove the air conditioner vents. Each vent conceals a screw. Remove all of the screws holding the black upper trim in place, and it will pop off like the lower trim did. Now you have access to the radio. I'd reccommend a delco CD player, they are very strong units. Good luck!

Malibu...turn vents fully in one direction, push down on top edge sticking out...no nasty scratches from wire implements. Side vents are specific, centers are the identical. Try putting gearshift in neutral(with parking brake set!) before removing black trim.

I am also interested in upgrading my stock 92 and 96 PA radio/tape player to a radio/CD player. Crutchfield (aftermarket audio folks) says that the 92/96 PA well depth (bulkhead distance fore to aft) is too shallow to support a radio/CD player as an integrated unit. Is this true? If so, does anyone offer a split system for retrofit in the 92/96 PA where the player can fit in the glove box, under the glove box, under the seat, etc?

Crutchfield folks are right, basically.

However, it's not impossible. I put a DIN sized radio in my PA, and it works quite well after doing some modifications to the dashboard. Yeah, padriver has it right...you may not need to remove all that he did, but some cutting is needed. Some of the sheetmetal may be bent out of the way. The adaptor kit looks like the same Metra kit I used, and it brings the unit out about 1/2 to 3/4". This helps to fit it in the shallow opening. Be prepared when you go in, and the install will go much smoother. Also, wireless remotes are a wonderful thing in a big car...highly recommended! I have 3 sets of preamp cables hooked to mine, and things are tight in there, but the extra height of the opening helps. Position connectors and wires under the unit to help support it.
