$1.28 for premium gas anyone?

Since when did premium gas become so much cheaper compared to regular unleaded?
When I stopped at this gas station in Livonia, MI yesterday, I looked at the pump and couldn't believe my eyes:
Unleaded 89 - $2.09
91 - $2.18
Premium 93 - $1.28
I was pissed that I had a civic because I could fill it up with only 9 more gallons.
For $11.67 I got a little more than 9 gallons.

I have a friend who works at a gas station and for shits and giggle we switched the gas price to 11.1 cents a liter and watched as everyone lined up only to tell them it was 91.1 and they did not have a 9 in store. His manager wasn't too pleased when he came in

They use PON (Pump Octane Number) in the US (different grading system.) Their 89 is like our 91, and their 93 is like our 98 (synergy, bp ultimate etc). Although I get the inkling that they get better stuff - our so-called "98" is absolute weasel piss :banghead:

True that!
The gas/petrol in the states is HEAPS better than the shit we got here in New Zealand. Man I wouldn't give to be able to pump some CAM2 105 race gas into the old girl!

I believe that 100 RON gas is available straight off the pumps in Japan, that'd kick ass.
I used to put 98 in the Jetta, then I crashed it and bought the Honda, which I now put 91 into. Saves me fuckloads when I fill up.
Only filled up once since the gas prices rose though and I'm at the same price I used to pay for 98 RON when I did that.

Same.
The Diamante costs me $78 to fill up now (about 60 liters) - with 96 at Shell. Used to pay less than that for 98 when I had a GT Legacy.
this lasts me 350km which means i have to fill up twice a week. Ratshit. :disappoin

notice gas goes up every summer when people tend to take long trips and drive around more? they try to act like it costs them more for gas even though its the same price, they just get rich off of it... thats what will be the end of Busch, doesn't matter who runs against him, I've got my money on them cuz Busch has too much to do with gas and oil for his own good

Well ULP was NZD 1.25 per litre this morning or about AU $1.10 or US 75c. And that's for 91 RON, 98RON is about 12-15% more expensive.

It's $2.38 a gallon for Supreme or 93 octane gas here in North Jersey. It cost around $45 to filler-up at Exxon on my dads Beamer. Why are they goin up (sorry, behind with the news).

This is not a justification of the current prices but there are a few things that some people are conveinently forgetting.
Supply and demand works all the time. As long as there are no price controls, it never fails.
In the summer, demand rises. OPEC cut back on supply a few months ago. Hence, prices will rise.
Another factor is capacity. Capacity is running nearly full. That will affect supply. Even if the per barrel price of crude drops, there are not enough refineries to handle an influx. Due to the cost of meeting regulations (and I'm sure cost saving measures) no refineries have been built in the last twenty years - in the states anyway.
Another item that effects prices via supply and demand is the EPA. Certain blends are required for certain ares ad different times of the year. The same summer demand has to be met by a stricter refinement (sulfer) in the large metro areas then in the winter. The supply of that that is also lower. Again, supply is smaller and demand is higher. Prices go up.
Complain all you will, but the basic facts remain the same. Even if there is some price gouging, the cost of fuel is a direct result of supply and demand. With the supply side affected by regulation, capacity and crude production and the hunger for fuel by everyone - prices will continue their upward climb.

Yogs puts up some valuable points but at USD 2.84 per US Gallon - fuel costs are pretty steep here for 91 RON let alone USD 3.26 for 98 RON.
This is nothing compared to the Europe where it's twice the price (and you wondered why US SUVs suck so badly when they try to export them there.)
My boss recently observed his Gen3 powered car was slurping thru 13-14 MPG... And quite a few folk I know are bleating about the cost of filling up their SUVs and how hungry they are on fuel seeing as fuel prices have escalated 20% in the past 12 months...
On the other hand, public transport patronage is experiencing a significant increase as the price threshold means more folk are prepared to take the relative inconvenience of mass transit compared to the cost of private transport...
And as for the world's oil supply drying up in 6 or 7 years? All I have to say to that is... yeah right. If the stuff gets scarce then it would become economic to extract it from shales etc... you can turn natural gas into unleaded fuel... it was done commercially for some time in NZ but the plant was converted to produce methanol because there's a greater demand for it...

The 'first born' is a nice twist :lol2:
We are in no danger of running out of crude. I don't have the link handy but based on current known reserves and tracking demand (allowing for then increase) there are several decades left.
Take into account the rate that crude is located (and it will eventually stop) the projections go up to a few centuries.
The push for alternate fuels is needed, but its not a 'must have by tomarrow' priority.

Rumors through politics say that Bush was given a gegraphical view of Iraq for their oil wells before starting the war. They say one of the main reasons to go to Iraq was for the oil, not only to get saddam.

I thin you should take your argument over to the Political, Investments and Current Affairs forum....Other than that, I heard that cop cars use propane for fuel, or a mix of some sort. Anyone know if this is true???:sly:
