I have (or am going to buy...) a 1998 GSX. I am buying it online, and the guy is asking 16,500 for it. Does this sound like a good deal? Is it too good of a deal? Maybe he's trying to hassle some money. I don't know, if anyone can direct me someway, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone has a GSX that they want to sell, tell me.

spyder borught up a good point. make sure the 60K mi check is done. if not get that done. and get some detail pics of those mods so you know they're sitll functioning and in good condition. too many people have gotten scamed buying things over the internet. you dont' wanna be the next one.

Thats pretty steep IMO, it's nice that it's already modded, and it has low mileage. But there's no way of telling how the car was treated or the quality of the mod installs. I'd try to talk him down a littl bit. it's worth 10... maybe 11. but I wouldn't go more than that. Thats just me though. see what you can get him to do for you. Hope you get it. Good luck

i just think that 16500 is alot to spend on a 60k car. you can buy a 02 wrx for 15500 at the auctions. or even a vr4 with less miles. its your $ spend it however you want to..

gelman4u
05-18-2004, 11:20 AM
that is a little steep, i would definitaly get him down and if possible look at it and have it verified that the mods are functioning properly before you purchase a car over the internet, on another note, i bought my car stock over the internet, and was EXTREMELY pleased with it, so its not always bad..

I agree with that, it's too high, IMO the car's worth maybe 11-12k at most. I bought my 99 Eclipse for 4,500 on eBay.... although the car is stock and it's the base model... if I put 10k into it it would come out the way I want it, and a lot better. I wouldn't pay 16k for some car that someone else already modded... unless you want to save the trouble. However IMO, the mileage isn't a concern though, I have a friend who has a 98 GS-T with over 120k on it, he drives that thing like crazy, but it's properly maintained and never gave him any problems, ever.

Overall, I think that a 98 GSX with 60K for 16,500 isn't that bad, with all the mods that are done to it. It's up to you. You're not going to have much fun with this car, as far as the satisfaction of working on it. All the parts are already installed. The fun thing about DSM's is the maintenance. That's the way I see it. If you want the car, I'd go get a KBB quote and print it out.....bring it to him and talk him down. I would not spend any more than 13,000 on this car. Like the other guy said, "it's your money" Do what you want with it.

that is the Blue Book estimate for a private party sell. 16,5 is a lot to pay and if you want it it is a great save on the aftermarket stuff. if you don't buy it someone else will...

Unless I miss read that it did not say anything about a turbo upgrade. So if he is still on the stock turbo, it is NOT worth it. But if it is upgraded, the price is still too much.

I agree with him, the mods are nice... but 19k? It's high... low miles taken into consideration too. DSM's are nice cars but they're not worth that much in my opinion.

jeez those are high prices... the 19k is just way too much. the guy says no dreamers, but is he talking to himself? book is 12,900. that guy is high on his own supply.

the other one is nice as well, but there are some discrepencies in the description like that make me think he is high on ^^ supply too:

This low mileage Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX must be sold because I am buying a house. I am the second owner, have all receipts. I changed the oil every 3000 miles, always kept very clean and is surely an attention getter. This car has an Injen *^*cold air intake system*^* [uh turbo's don't have CAI's], Apex blowoff valve [sux]. *^*Pacesetter 3" downpipe*^* [jeez i had no idea these guy's also made SHITTY DP's too?!?], Catgo freeflow catalytic converter, B&M adjustable fuel pressure regulator and gauge, Autometer C2 Boost gauge and Air/fuel mixture guages mounted on a gauge pillar. I also have all stock parts. *^*This turbo is pushing up to 22Lbs of boost*^* [i hope he is not serious about that. but also notice no mention of a boost controller, so probably not]. Tires on the car have no more than 5000 miles on them so they are still in very good shape. Asking 16,900 OBO (262)894-4500 Waukesha

i must've missed this... but where are the mods that he said he put in that worth $5500. if he's talking about the AC and power window shit at the bottom.... i certainly hope not. definitely NOT worth it. a brand new GST was going for $20K correct me if i am wrong.

BoostedSpyder
05-19-2004, 12:02 AM
the mod list is in the post :)

but a KBB of 12,900 + 6000 [he only said 5500] is still only 18,900. guy is crazy... but it is a GSX slightly modded with only 22k miles on it...

High again. GSX is nice, turbo is nice but it's not worth 18k. Buy a base model like me [I got mine for 4500 on eBay, which I plan to work on over the next 2 years] and do some engine mods, ecu upgrade, fuel upgrade then turbo that... make it a rs-T, you still spend less. And you end up with a relatively fast car. Of course it's not awd, but who cares... it's not like you're going to street race for money.. heh.

the way i have always felt about anything is if you can afford it, get it. obliviously you are looking into the prices of these cars and this is what you are comming up with. wether they are worth it or not or what KBB prices are, if the only guy's that are selling them all have them at a high price you are at the mercy of the seller. modern economics. kinda like gas prices.

imagine if everyone selling a GSX got together and said we all are only going to sell them for 20,000. guess what whoud happen. i can garantee that they would still sell. i had this problem being a professional DJ. we were all trying to under-bid each other for jobs, ending up with $250 just to get a gig. we all got together and instead of fighting eachother we joined and formed a 'union' of sorts. within 2 months we raised the bar to $800 average for a gig. so if you got the $$ i would pick up the lowest milage one, so you can get the most out of it. and don't waste your $$ on an RS to build up. while possible there are only a finite few [one of the best examples is eclipseRST] that have come close to maxing out the potential of the RS, and i'm afraid to ask how much $$ went into those cars. you will LOVE a GSX and lust after a GST if you don't get one.

RiceRocket18
05-19-2004, 02:21 PM
if you get an rs, more than likely by the time you finish all your upgrades and get to the turbo, your milage will be rocket high. if you want a turbo.. definintely look for one. if speed is not that big of an issue, just look for the lowest mi one.

alrighty now....i have been looking for gsx myself and i have talked to that guy with the black gsx with 22,000 miles on it. if you buy that one from him you will get the stock tail lights. he did upgrade the turbo but i cant remember what he upgraded it to off the top of my head. you will get all the stock parts which include the stock rims and tires and exhast system stock turbo. the reason it has such low mileage is because where he lives....when it snows they put salt down and since the salt eats the shit out of your paint he only drives it during the summer. you may still be able to talk him down because a couple weeks ago he was asking 19,500 so you never know. but goodluck with whatever it is you decide on doing.

I agree with almost everything that has been said regarding this post so far. But....Just to put things in perspective.....I purchased my '97 Spyder GS-T with no mods (bought it from Ms. Pennsylvania 1999 :naughty: ) with 49K for $14,200. At the time this was pricey compared to the Kelly Blue Book but I had looked for 6 months to find what I wanted (GS-T, Spyder, 5-speed) and this was it. Believe it or not 99% of what I found were automatics. :loser: I could afford it, the car was maintained and in perfect condition (and it was a stick). Sometimes you just have to pay more for something hard to come by! So I say if you can afford it and it's what you want....GO FOR IT!

That was just my :2cents:

exactly what i'm saying!

i fell upon mine and i didn't even want it at first [but i did give my friend the sales guy a very wide eyed test drive!!], i was looking for a GSX. but it was a turbo, stick, in perfect stock condition with 78k...

i told my friend that i would give him 9500 cash out the door, thinking that was just an unattainable #, they wanted like 12k i think [+ tax ect]. 2 weeks later he calls mne and is like 'you still want the spyder? i can give it to you now for that price.' what could i do? i had a custom exhaust and a K&N on it that week!!!

but the bottom line is that you should never settle for less than what you want. your happiness is most important. if you are a cahs buyer, show up with $17,500 to see the car. things change really quick when there are a pile of $100's involved... just make sure you get what you want!!!
