93 LX Timing Belt Post-Replacement Problem

My 93 1.9 'scort recently stalled on me at a major intersection a week after I bought it from my friend. It was unable to start again. We were able to tow it back to his house and begin work on it. We were unable to remove the tensioner bolt (I know little about repairs and my friend knows little about escorts), though my friend says that the bolt was stripped.
Was the bolt stripped or is there a special way to remove the tensioner belt?
In addition, after replacing the timing belt as marked by walking the belt onto the gears by turning them, we put it back together and started the car. Now the engine started, but it began to shake violently immediately after starting. My friend, who I still owe for the car, is now suggesting two things:
1. We put the timing belt in 180 degrees wrong.
or... more unfortunately:
2. When 8 teeth were knocked off of the old timing belt, it caused piston damage.
Are either of these ideas plausible? Is one more plausible than another? How much money is this going to set me back?
Thanks

number two sounds more plausible as if #1 was the case, i don't believe the engine would start at all. check your timing belt to make sure its DEAD ON.

Befor you go any futher you need to get hold of a compession tester.
which screws into the sparkplug holes.
Remove all plugs.
Check the compression on all four cylinders i suspect that when the belt stripped off the 8 teath the piston on one of the cyliders has bent a valve. a compression test will confirm this.
If so you will have to remove the cylinder head a replace it.

Good news:
When we replaced the timing belt the first time, I left the car to my friend to put the pulleys back on and the spark plugs back in, etc. He switched two of the spark plugs (did not read Haynes... sigh). We figured it out after we took the timing belt off the 2nd time. We have it all back together now and the car runs great!
A big hassle for a little mistake, but I'm just glad I only paid 18 for the belt and not 400 for the installation!
No piston/valve damage, thank goodness
Thanks guys for your help!
