Oil cap issues

has anyone else had a problem keeping the oil cap on? i noticed awhile back that the oil cap would not tighten down when the engine was cold. i thought it was the cap, so i went and got a new cap. even with the new cap it won't tighten down when the engine is cold, it will tighten when the engine is warm. i popped the hood the other day and my oil cap is off stuck down by the battery. i am now holding it on with duct tape. any help would be great.

I had the same problem.
There is TWO different caps for the 2000 sounds like they keep giving you the later one and you have the earlier neck ;-)

Me too. Haven't gotten a chance to go to the dealer yet.

Here's one solution.

I thought that the gas cap problems were being fixed by a new valve cover under warranty? Hadn't heard about the two different caps.

ATH,
you wouldn't by chance have a pn# for the correct cap? or know what to ask the dealer for??
thanks

Uh, I think you meant "oil" cap Schlud! :finger:

Yeah, a lot of people have had new valve covers put on because the threads were screwed up or something. My cap is so tight I can barely get it off when I change the oil.

That still cracks me up that ToyMan used a rubber to cover his air compressor thingy! :D

Nope sorry. I went in to a dealer after losing it on a trip and he asked me the production date of my truck said the computer said there was two different caps.

That's a solution for losing the oil cap, not keeping it on the valve cover.

Took mine into the dealer 2-days ago . Put on a new cover . So far so good . Should be covered under your warranty.

Warning, I had the same problem with the oil cap staying on, after replacing it 3 times I called nissan to see if other people were having the same problem she said yes and that they would be happy to fix it, but I had to many miles to fall under the warranty. So I had my mechanic fix something up for me that worked. But I believe the damage was already done. Today I lay my xterra to rest!!! Engine is locked up! after faithfully having the oil changed this is the only thing that I can contribute it to. SO TAKE MY ADVISE AND TRADE IT IN OR AT LEAST HAVE THE ENGINE CHECK BEFORE THE WARRANTY RUNS OUT
I wish somebody had warned me of this problem so I hope this helps
