86' Delta 88 Trans shifting problems

Hi, we were driving along after 2 hrs. When the car downshifted going up a small hill then wouldn't upshift. The car would go into neuteral then "catch" into first or second gear for awhile then back to neutral. But when we hit level road we got our speed from 20mph to a breezy 50 mph. need help for my war pony. Thanks.
