1992 TSI will not start. HELP???

I have recently encountered problems w/ starting my 1992 Ealge Talon AWD Turbo TSI. Does not matter if the car sits over night or 2 minutes. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it does not. It sounds as if the coil wire is not connected and just continues to turn over but does not start. I let it sit for 3-5 minutes and it fires right up. I know it is not a fuel filter because after the car starts it does not lug or bog down. Any suggestions? Also, when the car will not start it will not start when attempting to pop the clutch. Might be a firing problem? I have Splitfire plugs that are only 3 months old and look fine. Please shed some light onto the darkness that is known as "Baby," (the 92 Talon) Thanks, ROB

DSM's are very sensitive to the plugs for some reason dunno why but just put in NGK single point plugs and you should be good send a pm to EclipseRST if you want the exact number. BTW talons, mitsubishi eclipses and plymouth lasers are all the same car made by Diamond Star Motors (DSM) with different exterior styling and the eclipse boards are much more active so u probably wanna post over there instead of here

NGK BPR6ES or NGK BPR7ES plugs only, gapped to .028-.030

While I have read at various times in the past on these forums that TSI's don't run well with some brands of plugs, I seriously doubt that this is your problem.

It sounds to me as though you are either having an intermittent fuel pump solenoid or ignition problem. First thing I would check for is any fault codes on the ECM. It may check out fine though, as there are a lot of conditions that won't register a fault only because of the way the unit is designed. It's worth checking though.

Most of the trouble shooting tips regarding not starting conditions apply to a Talon that just won't start, period. It becomes more difficult to diagnose when the problem is intermittent. I would certainly suggest going over all of your wire harness connections to the crank motion sensor, ignition coil pack, etc., to be sure everything is tight.

Sorry, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Edit: I should have said intermittent fuel pump or fuel pump solenoid problem. I actually think it would be more probable that the pump could be the problem if it is intermittent, but either one could be malfunctioning.

I agree about the spark plugs. I don' think this is your problem-unless there is a physical problem with the plugs-tip blown off or cracked insulator, etc. The next time your car wont start, try spraying starting fluid down the intake. If it starts, it is a fuel delivery problem. If not, it is ignition/electrical. This may help narrow things down. Is there a check engine light, or any codes? Even if your light went on and off in the past, you may have a code stored.

if you're leaving it sit with the ignition on that lets the fuel pump run and build up pressure in the lines. definatly check/replace your fuel filter. you might also want to run a bottle of injector cleaner, make sure to get the name brand stuff. if none of that helps you may need a new fuel pump. it would also be useful to post a mod list if you have anything
