i have a friend that is thinking about getting a grand am. i know that they are good cars they are reliable and good gas milage ect. but are they really a performance car? i have never seen one at the tracks do better than a 14. is it just that i have never seen a modded one or are they not good for performance.

it depends what you compare it for performance. if your talking about a trans am to a grand am then the TA would be better, but say a honda civic to a grand am the GA would be better. what year is your friend interested in getting and so on.

he said that he wanted a 3.4 v6. 2004 i looked at some specs. they said it had 170 hp. im guessin about 140-150 at the wheels. i forget how much torque but i remember it wasnt bad. i mite of read it wrong but did it say that didnt come with the 5 speed on the v6s. the chart i saw said it only came on v4's but that doesnt sound rite.

your right the 3400 only comes with an auto. the 2.4 twin cam and ecotec came with 5 speeds. theres mixed reaction in the grand am community about the potental of the 3400 compared to the twin cam or ecotec. the after market is way bigger for the TC and eco then then the 3400.

My friend has a Grand Am and he does love its performance... of course he did add a supercharger, exhaust, and stablizer bars and took out the governor... He is looking into getting a different chip in the car...but it does have excellent performance.

the 3300 has NO aftermarket for it. swap out that motor for a 3800 or 3400 or buy a new car.

what about the 3400's what is the cheapest way to go from 170hp to 200hp (i'm looking at a stage 3 cold air intake, but thats like 10 hp)

ive been doin some reading on the 3300 and alot are saying that its the 3800,s lil brother i have a 3800 sittin in the driveway, im wondering if i can use the intake manifold and injectors off that and bolt them on my 3300 perhaps it will have greater airflow?, i took off the alternator tonight and the identical, any thoughts? oh another thing i had thought of was these electric blowers...do they actually work they claim with 2 stacked it can give u a 4 psi boost, sounds great but i wonder if they actually work

from what i understand the 3300 is a destroked 3800. I would just swap the 3300 out for the whole 3800 you have.

and these electric turbos you spec of are crap. they take alot of power to run them, they last for about 15 seconds or so, nitrous would be a better option over those.

your probably not going to see 10hp out of an intake. maybe 5-10. but not a deffinated 10hp. But i would think headers, full exhuast ported intake manifolds and intake plus a dhp you would be at or over 200hp.

swapping engines is neither cheap or easy Grandamld9. I dont know about adding your 40 horses but you could do simple things like adding a cold air intake (about 10hp) and get a new exhaust. These two combined should give you close to 20hp more

3x00s respond very well to headers and full exhaist, I would'nt be suprised to see 20 hp from a well thought out header/full exhaust setup. Add a nice intake, gasket matched and polished uim/lim, mildly ported heads, get a cam regrind, and you should be around 215-225 hp at least.

The 3300 has plenty of power but the tranny kills it. first thing to do if you're building a decent 3300 is to swap out the th125 3-speed for a 4t60 4-speed (only few have done it since its kind of uncharted water) the new tranny will get a bit more power to the ground but more importantly, the gear ratios will give the car more "pep" around town. Then build an intake, build some equal length headers, (if you know how, I don't) get a nice mandrel bent exhaust system, gasket match the intake manifold and have the heads mildly ported and polished. after all that you'd probably have around 180-185 hp, maybe more, since I don't know how well the 3300 responds to decent headers

i never said that a motor swap was a cost effective way of adding power. and thanks for saying what was already said by me.

whoa, easy there killer. I wasnt givin you lip. He wanted a cheap way to increase hp and swapping engines is not cheap. And as for repeating you, just makin sure everyone heard ya ;-)

k so ill take it to a preformance shop for headers and a exhuast, and i can do the cold air intake myself, but i still need to know if it would do me any good to mount the 3800,s intake manifold on the 3300, im assuming they will fit if ther the same engine block and im also asuming that the 3800 intake will flow more air through as it is taller, just wondering if anyone knows if they would just bolt on?

Thats the spot. Thats where the stock intake went and is a great spot to increase for large cold air intake tubes. I also added a wheel well intake (used a die grinder ans a carbide bit) so i have the option of dual cai or ram air. I can also remove my airbox for warm air intake too lol. I use it when I want to make extra noise.
