can anybody help please. i have an 88 2.58v 944, ive just done the head and oil cooler gaskets, on startup, the car started and then oil started spraying everywhere, when i looked, the oil filter gasket was sticking out,(itwas a fram one that i was using to start up on) so i changed it for a genuine porsche one, made sure it was seated right and, and had anoyher go, same again, oil filter gasket poped out. could thid be that the oil pressure is to much, or the relieve valve is not working, or would the cambelt timing being out one tooth do this, it shouldn't be, but it's a thought. any help from you guys would be great. thanks.

I'd place my bet on the oil pressure relief valve.
I'll see if i can find some more info as I have an older spring & plunger type.

thanks, i think you could be right. i have removed it tonight, and can't see anything abnormal, but it does look like the oil cooler may be out of place but dont understand how this can move, as it is fixed in one position by four bolts? but i does look like the valve may not be in there right. ho and my mum didn't like the 6ltr of oil x2 on her drive.

I would second that. Just check it to make sure if there's anything wrong with it! GOOD LUCK DEALING WITH YOUR PROBLEM

What is the Fram part #? One part # flows in one direction, the other (I believe PH2849) flows in the other direction.

Parts 43-44-45 are for a turbo
Did you notice any corrosion on the oprv?

the fram# is ph6941, but i've found from the last fram filter i had fitted, they do not have a return valve in the filter like a genuine one does, hence the tappet noise i was getting on start up because the oil was draining back off. But i had another fram filter spare a thought i would start up on that, and then drain off and put the OE one on. thanks for the pic, its a big help, just what i've been looking for. where did u get the pic from? thanks.

No, didn't notice any corrosion on it, in fact, changing the seals on the cooler was straight forward and didn't think it would cause a problem removing the valve.

PH 2849 have a backflow valve in the correct direction.
I've pulled diagrams from many websites, Probably rennlist though.
My best suggestion, loosen the cooler assembly (drain coolant first), remove OPRV, line up the cooler assembly to the OPRV hole, reinstall OPRV, tighten cooler, fill w/ fluids. Try a 2849 as well.

They make a special alignment tool that you slide in place of the valve assembly and then tighten the cooler housing bolts. Thus assuring that the valve will be properly aligned when installed. I think Performance Products had the tool fairly cheap. Good luck

car is done, the OPRV eas a bit different from the one i taken out, but its done the job and its up and running. it took about 15mins for the lifters to shut up, and the balance shaft belt is a bit to tight and making a noise but i'll adjust it tomoz. had a new sports eshaust system fitted stainless steel, and it sounds awsome. thanks for the info guys.
