new battery, sounds like there isn't enough current to trip the solenoid, try jumping it. then go through the circuit between the starter and battery to see if there is anything breaking the circuit

The battery is brand new, so we hot wired it to the starter (touched) and it turned over, but wouldnt run...........now what?

Its a 1980, Carbeurated. i was chatting with someone that said since its not firing it might be the coil? is it possible?but the main things are that the wire are all attached but the dash lights dont come on and the the engine wont turn over on its own power...so it might also be the igniiton since i drilled it out?

is the solenoid working? try taking a screw driver to connect the two posts (but make sure you are not touching the metal part...it's gonna spark a little) when you get the engine turning over consistently pull one of the spark plugs to see if you are getting spark, if not it may be the coil, distributor or plug wires. do you know that you are getting fuel?

Well, i think i have...the only fuses i can find are the ones by the hood latch?

i havent tried the solenoid yet, but that may be it. and no im not getting fuel, it wouldnt fire when we sprayed some starting fluid into the carb and truned the engine by hot wiring the starter.

well you may be getting fuel then and no spark, check for spark first then worry about your fuel system

if there are no dash lights then you should check under dash for more fuses,(and kickpanels)also tap on any relays with ign on and see if you get a reaction, but i think your prob lies with a fuse as _no dash lamps _no power to starter.more likely to be in engine bay.
