If you had a choice which would you pick and do you think that the 327 would be too much of a pain to wrestle in there?

If I were going to take on that challenge (and it would be a big one) I wouldn't fool with a 327. I would spend the $$ and go for a 400 small block. You have much more power potential. You can very easilty squeeze 500 horses and over 500 foot lbs. of torque out of one. Keep in mind that you either have to have an adapting plate to use the original transmission (and it needs to be beefed up) or a custom drive shaft if you are going to use a GM tranny. You also need to consider fuel delivery. A standard Cherokee fuel pump would starve a small block V8, so you would have to fabricate an installation for one. (I would suggest a Holley manual pump on the engine itself) You also need to keep in mind that the distributor will most likely hit the firewall...so modifications would have to made to the firewall to allow room...or you could just go all out and use an electric ignition system with crank shaft positioning sensor, TPS, IAC, and everything else that goes along with it. I say all of this to say....you have a lot of work and money to consider if you want to do this. It can be done, but requires a BIG commitment on your part. If you are going to do it.....don't settle for a 327....don't do it. :nono:
