I was just reading "5.0 Mustang and Super Fords" magizine and I just read about this guy putting a 5.4L DOHC engine into a foxbody. I was just wondering how much time and money this would take?

Would it bolt up to any of the engine mounts?

Would you have to do any body modifications?

Would it bolt up to the tranny?

thank you to those who respond!

Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords put a lightning engine in a fox-body mustang a while ago but they had to put a 4" cowl hood to cover the blower and it still stuck out a bit.

It's has been done before like said wit a lighting motor.

Answers to ya questions are no,some,no.

No, Lots, No

A friend of mine tried to do a 5.4 quad cam swap into his fox body, and it would not clear the shock towers. He eventually went to a 5.4 2V (which is a total waste of time with the shitty flowing modular 2V heads) and he still has almost no room in there. To change cams we couldn't even get the valve covers off without jacking up the engine.

In short, the 5.4 is a waste of time. A 4.6 will make tons of power, and be much easier to get in there than the 5.4, if you really want a mod motor.

5.4 too much work, I'll stick with the 4.6 or 5.0 both have good bang for the buck.

Which block (the 5.0 or the 4.6) can handle more horsepower?

What are the Pros and Cons of each block?

Thank you all!!!

A stock 5.0 is spilitting at around 500 RWHP. A stock 4.6 block with a cobra crank, some good aftermarket rods and pistons will handle 1000++ horsepower. Only cons of the 4.6 are a bit less power because of less inches.

I was considering putting a 5.4 in my 97 4.6 standard stang, aren't they more horsepower and torque stock? wont they bolt and plug in? whats the info on swapping it in my car..

You left out the disproportionate amount of money it takes to build that 1000HP 4.6 and bolt it into a car with an ignition/fuel system to support it, versus a 302/351W based build.
You can buy a Sportsman block and fill it with a stroker rotating assy. for less than it will take to put your 4.6 motor together, and make it work.

Putting a 5.4 into a 4.6 car or a 5.0 car takes even more time, money and effort than does putting a 4.6 engine into a 5.0 car. If you just want to go fast/quick and you do not have a huge budget, don't bother. Keep it simple. I have seen cars in the 10's with blowers on a factory 5.0 shortblock, and I am running low 11's on a factory Explorer shortblock with N2O. Cams have been changed on both shortblocks, but no internal engine work was done.

Are you kidding me? A sportsman 302 block is BARELY stronger than a late model thin wall casting, and is basically identical to an early model high nickel block. With a 4.6 you need some 600 dollar rods and 600 dollar pistons, and your bottom end is solid to 1000+ horsepower. To have a 302 motor that will take 1000+ horsepower you need 1500+ for a block, 800 for a crank, 600 for some rods, 600 for some pistons. For the 4.6 swap all you need is a new ECU, swap k-member, and some ingenuity. The cost of the swap is easily taken care of just by the price of buying a good block (Dart, R302, World) not even including machine work. Keep in mind a bare R302 needs quite a bit more machine work than a preused 4.6 block to get it ready to run.

I am scratching my head and wondering to myself 1. Were are you going to find a "Used" 4.6L 32 valve motor. 2. why would you pay out the ass for one when you can get a new performance "5.0" that drops right in with no hasle and has the same horsepower and torque and costs half as much... Makes no sense to me.
Althoe the new technology IS badass and I have been waiting for american companies to start using OHC technology for quite some time, I stilldont think its worth twice the amount as a high performance engine that puts out equal power.

You are way off base comparing a 302 Sportsman block to a Mexican block. NOT basically identical. The Sportsman block will go hundreds of horsepower more. To say that it is BARELY stronger than a 5.0 block is a great exageration.
I was actually referring to the 351W Sportsman block. Real world drag race performance, the A351/A5.8 blocks will live in the 800-1000HP range.
Even if you use factory ignition and fuel management (even with a flashed ECU) as it appears you are advocating with a 4.6, it commonly runs 3500+ for a complete donor Cobra motor with harness, etc. That is before you put your rods and pistons into it, and before you adapt it to your car.
The bottom line is that relatively few people are going to build a 1000HP motor. This thread is about someone wanting to do a budget build. Most people asking about a first time build have neither the resources nor experience that you or I have. Therefore, a 4.6 or 5.4 swap is not the best means to their end.
