This is close, styling goes the SL hands down, believe me. But despite the weight disadvantage of the SL, the straight line performance of the two are quite similiar, but I'd go with the SL for it's overall performance and styling.

i agree, its a very close race. a 97 SL weighs about the same as the Maxima. (3263) i give it to the SL but it could be a drivers race. oh yea and a 91-96 base model 3000gt would also be a good match up. damn those maximas. competing against a 3000gt. hey what is the top speed on a Maxima??

I'd take the Maxima, given that the SL doesn't launch or perform anything near what a VR4 does. If the Maxima is a 5-speed, I definitely give it the nod.

The Maxima weighs less and has more torque. By pure numbers it would win. The VQ is such a superior motor in this race. Styling: I take the Maxima. Comfort: Maxima.

This isn't even looking close.

i'll give it to the car with 150 less lbs of body weight and the extra lil bit of tq, aka the maxima.

funny how the 3kgt guys say the SL and me and pick say the max. the thing is that i drove a 3000gt and a prelude before i bought my old maxima, which was a 95 and it was hands down faster than both cars, that's why i picked it. i think the prelude was faster than the 3kgt too. so i can't see the next generation of maxima losing to the same car. the maxima in this comparo has a variable intake manifold and cvvtc but when i drove it, the 3kgt didn't seem to have any one place where it made really good power like the others did. i think the max'd take it and i'm also more partial to the styling and amenities. the shifter in the 3kgt either had a cut shift lever or is just really shitty from the factory; it was like playing an arcade game.

hey well maybe the Maxima would win but hey you cant compare the looks of a 3000gt with the looks of a Maxima. 3000gt= beautiful Maxima= family car with some power. Sorry but i just think Maximas are ugly.i dont understand why a grandma needs 222 hp in her car.

Maxima's, IMO look a hell of alot better then a "big eyed" 3000GT.. As for the race, I say the maxima.

that's a strange thing to say. why does a 3kgt sl need 220 hp? it's just a FWD wannabe sports/touring car.

why does a family car need 255 HP and a 6-speed transmission? To kill just about anything you want. Especially wannabe V-6 sportscars.

shut up and go drive your ugly Maximas. i hope one day you guys encounter a 3000gt Vr4 and then we'll see who laughs. you will get killed by a much superior car.

thats not smart to say, they are defending as you were. you seem to get mad if people disagree with you. you made your comments and they made there's. you talked down on there cars and they talked down on yours, and you threw the first blow.

i'd say for speed ummm close call but i'd take the maxima for speed, but as for all around styling speed and just everything else involved i'd take the 3000gt sl. the sl also has a higher top speed and longer gears if i'm correct which would make it a very good match on the highway.

Vr4 guys better watch out if they run into a 2002 or 2003 Maxima. If the Maxima is 6-speed, and there is any kind of lapse on the VR4's part, the VR4 will be lunch.

wait wait wait, 3000gt sl is a fwd car?!?!?! i never knew that. makes me laugh at it even more. it would be a hard decision for me between the 3000gt and maxima because the maxima has four-doors, and i can't stand that. so i don't know which one i would choose.

i always thought it was rwd also. for one, it is one of my babies direct competitor so naturaly i would think it is rwd. that is so funny.

Yup - the SL is FWD. Its still the car I'd rather have then a Maxima though regadless of if its faster or not. Based soley on the numbers, it looks to me that it's going to be a drivers race.

hey freakonaleash now that you know the SL is a FWD car. which do you think would win your car or a 3000gt?

freakonaleash1187
05-17-2004, 06:11 PM
i would pick my car before i knew the 3000gt was fwd to win, so i would still say mine would win. i has only seen times for the sl in the low 16s and mine does it in the mid 15s. and then at the track, rwd is always better than fwd. i especially now have lost all respect for the sl, but i still respect the vr-4.

low 16s??????? you must be looking in the wrong places. Trust me a 3000gt SL averages 15.5 1/4. a really good driver might put it in low 15's to even really high 14's. 14.9- 14.8. i bet these times could go with your car as well. these two cars are very much alike. Difference is FWD and RWD. Why lose respect for these cars if theyre very much in some aspects like your car. i love both 3000gts and 300zxs. both cars are awesome cars.

i didn't like the base 3000gt that much to begin with. for some reason, it just doesn't appeal to me.

:iagree: 3kgt8.. Give it a break man. If someone say's they like a Maxima over a 3000gt SL why do you have to bitch about it?

Performance: Maxima.
Comfort: Maxima.
Looks: 3000GT SL.

All I can say is that I have raced a Stealth RT non-TT, same as SL, and I beat it with a busted intercooler, some detonation, and he had a head start. Even with the best driver in the world the SL will not beat the Maxima with a descent driver. I don't see an SL pulling high 14s in the 1/4 mile with that much power, FWD, and nearly 3,300 pounds of weight.

On a side note, 3kgt8, I don't want to see any more personal insults or attacks from you simply because someone does not share your opinion.

Polygon i would love to prove you wrong. I really cant believe your saying that the best driver in the world wouldnt be able to beat Maxima with a decent driver. Have you looked at the Stats both have 222 hp, the SL is about 64 lbs fatter. We are talking about a 2000 Maxima not the newer ones. You are not even given the 3000gt a chance. That is really messed up. But oh well i have to follow the rules.

I'm sorry, it is just that I've raced one with a car that had three separate problems and I still won, I just wasn't impressed. As long as the Maxima has a five-speed manual I think that it has the advantage over the SL. If the Maxima has an automatic I feel it would be a pretty even race.

I'm not saying you can't have your opinion, I'm just saying you need to express it with less hostility.

Definately the Maxima. If the Max has a good launch then the the 3000gt sl will be toast. Along with the wide power band of the VQ it also has more torque and less weight.
