Hey guys!!! Everyone tells me that powershifting during a drag race is the best thing to do........but what exactly is powershifting? I have asked many of my friends but they all say that powershifting is havin ur gas pedal down while shifting.......is that true??? Help me here?!?!!?

Powershifting is when you're at WOT and instead of clutching you just slam the shifter into the next gear. It'll murder your tranny but will give you a lil extra, most cars that are newer models wont let you though, you have to press the clutch to move the shifter on new models.

The only time I would ever powershift would be:
a. I am driving someone to the hospital
b. I am trying to run over George W. Bush

LoL kman!
Power shifting is not something to make a practice of, it destroys your car. However should the situation call for it, it will give you extra 'extra' when you're racing.

They make aftermarket strait cut gears that are intended for that kind of abuse....If youre serious enough about drag racing, you should probably invest in some...the problem wiht them though is they are usually expensive and its shithard to upshift

You could always get a CVT tranny and never have to worry about it...

if you have a car makin the power to actually need strait gears, then its gonna be damn noisy anyways!

actually helical cut gears ( standard on manuel transmissions ) are stronger then straight cut gears. the things that goes bad in a car from powershifting is the gear synchronizers, not the gears themselves.

you got it wrong!!!!!!
when you power shift you are a full throttle and you push the clutch in and shift as fast as you can then side step the clutch
there is now way you can shift without the clutch at full throttle unless you have a lentco trans they are made just for that and are not made for imports .they are made for american pro stock

civicchickster is correct. You do use the cluthc in a power shift. It is basically staying at WOT while you shift.
I have done this on my last 6 or 7 runs while shifting 3-->4 and have had zero ill side affects. In fact, everything seemed super-smoother.
I tried it on my last 2 runs for 2->3.
The first one was perfect and I actually broke traction on my big drag radials at 1/2 track :D
The second attempt was a nightmare. I missed the shift and crunched badly :(
My syncros from 1->2 do not instill enoguh confidence for me to try it on that shift.

how many names has he had on this damn site so far?
(back to topic)
ive never tired to powershift but the way i hear you do is acutally both ways people have said just hold down the gas and rip on the stick (with the clutch in) and then pop the clutch, or just rip as hard as you can on the shifter i dont know

From what i heard powershifting is when you force your car into the next gear without using your clutch and speedshifting is when you push in your clutch while you have your gas down and quickly put it into the next gear and let out the clutch (this is dangerous if you have a low revving motor). That is what ive heard, tell me if youve heard something different.

You'd think there would be a pretty universal interpretaion of the term. Either way it doesn't seem like it's the best thing for your automobile.

No, but Drag racing isn't exactly a good thing for your car ...
... shifting on throttle may be the best thing for your ETs if you get good at it. ;)

they make sequential trannies (dont know if thats the name but its the ones like motorcycles) for a few cars i know the 240 is one of them you don't need to let off the gas or use a clutch and they slap right into gear. the 240 is the only street aplication i can think of that has this as an aftermarket product...... i do wish they had something like that for my t56

sequential tranmissions are available for a number of cars, as well as custom applications, and are streetable.
quaife makes them for vw's.
trust makes them for skylines/240sx/supra
not hard to make them streetable.
power shifting is simply not letting off the gas when you shift, that's about it.
