That's not quite adequate though...as that also defines other words, doesn't it?

yea "state of being" is vague...but "is" could be something that's here. it "is"...wow that is hard to explain...thats ok though. defining "love" is even harder...

Is is the conjugated form of the infinitive model verb "to be" in the context of he, she, it. He is tall, she is hot, and it is green are examples in English. In the philisophical context, is is a state of being/existence. I am is an example that I exist. Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that deals with how we know what we know. We can use the law of identity to state we are because we exist.

I used it as a example. BTW, everyone owes it to themselves to be educated in philosophy. If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for everything.

Aside from those obscure dictionary definitions (as exemplified by some of the above posts), that as far as I'm concerned no one who speaks contemporary English can even understand, I don't think you can define it...

how many verbs can be defined without using the verb in the definition?

Ok, so it's present tense of "be"

That doesn't tell me what it is at all, because, hypothetically speaking, I'm Japanese, learning English, and I have no idea what "be" means either

That's where translation comes into play. Surely every culture uses some terminology for existance.
